Maths olympiad

so like I'm preparing for next years maths challenge by doing past papers because I want to improve myself to get qualified for the olympiad but all my other friends are really smart and they work really hard , but even they didn't get qualified for the olympiad
l know people prepare years for it but I just want to try

I'm starting to think my idea is crazy...

No, it's not a waste of time. You will certainly see a significant improvement in your scores if you begin preparing for it from now. And then, even if by next year you are still unable to get into the Olympiad, you will have developed skills that set you apart from other students such as holistic thinking, which is a very valuable asset when it comes around to university admissions.

It's the British mathematical olympiad if you do well in the senior maths challenge

OK so improve your SMC score firrst and then maybe look at getting one of the UKMT books?
