Why do people choose A Levels when they are only really useful for law or medicine?

Like if you aren't going into law or medicine then you may as well do a BTEC

That's not strictly true since if you want to go to a top end uni, they tend to require A Levels more than BTECs.

If you want to do specific subjects other than law or medicine, they might reject BTECs because they don't go into the respective subject in depth e.g. maths, physics, modern languages, classics.
Where they do accept BTECs, they might sometime ask for a relevant A Level on top e.g. some life science degrees will accept a BTEC in Applied Sciences but might ask for Biology or Chemistry on top.

If you want to play it safe going for a degree subject that has required subjects, then it's usually better to go for A Levels or IB over a BTEC.
Some people simply are not cut out to do BTECs (because they have poor practical skills for example) so A-levels where it’s more exams based suits them better.
