Career support available at Kingston University (and how to make the most of it!)

For lots of students (including me!), the idea of what I’m going to do after I graduate is something I probably don’t spend as much time thinking about as I should. But whether it’s your first year or your final one, Kingston University’s Careers and Employability Service is here to help you try and map out what you want out of the world of work here’s a brief overview of the services on offer.

The Career Centre (JG0006)
Located in the John Galsworthy building on the Penrhyn Road Campus, KU’s new Career Centre is the first port of call for any student seeking careers guidance. Feel free to drop in any time from 10-5pm, Monday to Friday to have your CV/LinkedIn profile checked over by a Student Careers Coach, or to receive more information on general careers enquiries such as using Handshake or booking an appointment with a Careers Advisor.

Handshake
Whether you’re looking for part-time jobs, graduate roles or internships/placements, Handshake is a great platform to check out. As the university’s main portal for advertising jobs, careers events and skills webinars, Handshake plays an essential role in any KU student’s employability journey, so make sure to set up your profile and get started (https://kingston.joinhandshake.co.uk/login).
Top tip - Kingston University also posts all their own on-campus job roles on Handshake, so keep a regular eye on it if you’re looking for flexible student work.

Careers Advisors
For specialist careers advice, our experienced Careers Advisors offer students one-on-one sessions where you’ll have the opportunity to discuss any career options or goals you might be currently looking into. Careers Advisors are specific to your faculty here at Kingston, so you’ll always get advice from someone who knows your field/industry well you might even discover a career path you’ve never really considered before!

Drop-In Sessions
If you’re a student at our Roehampton Vale, Knights Park or Kingston Hill campus, drop-in services are also available from 12-2pm on selected weekdays. Here, you can quickly speak to one of our Careers Advisors or our Student Careers Coaches for guidance on interview support, job search strategies or application support. The schedule is prone to change, so make sure to check out the Careers and Employability Service page on MyKingston for an up-to-date schedule with more information: https://kingstonuniversity.sharepoint.com/sites/mykingston/mysupport/KUTalent/Pages/default.aspx

As always, I hope this was helpful! Have you made use of the Careers and Employability Service here at Kingston? Or do you already have your mind made up on how you’re going to achieve your career goals?

- Eve (Kingston Rep).
