Good London Uni for Advertising, PR & Media?

Hi,

I have got one more choice left in my UCAS, and I want to put a uni based in london incase i decide to travel from home instead of living out. I live near romford so to get to central it is pretty quick, my 4 choices are:

University of Northampton - Advertising with Public Relations
Nottingham Trent - Media (with specialist pathways)
Middlesex University - Advertising, Public Relations and Media
De Montfort University - Media Studies

Yes... i know these aren't the 'best' ones but I am NOT an AAA student, more around the BBD area. Could anyone recommend a decent uni - similar to the ranking of the ones above that is IN london please; preferably with the course offerings of Advertising and PR or Media Studies.

Thanks guys for the help in advance, i really need to put another one down as need to send my UCAS of asap. I was going to put Anglia Ruskin, but have decided not to due to the bad reviews along with TVU and London Met.

I had a quick look at UCAS Course Search for advertising and the unis in London that do related courses are:

- University of East London
- University of Greenwich
- London Met
- Thames Valley
- University of the Arts
- University of Westminster

Out of all of those I would look into the course at Westminster, as they also do a PR degree.

Hope that helps

Maybe my first post was a bit harsh. BUT, I just find it hilarious that EVERY single uni mentioned in this thread are poor unis by most standards.

I'm applying to London Met and it has a good business school and you're more likely to get a job in your desired field in London too

What sort of couse is that?!?!

Do Maths, Physics, Engineering, Medicine or something. With those grades you wouldn't be able to so don't bother going university, not worth it. Northampton, Nottingham Trent, Middlesex loool you CANT be serious.

You should've just started a thread: Worst unis in London?

East London, Greenwich, London Met try them for your course.

But not everyone wants to do subjects like that, for example if you want to work in advertising itself potential employers would much perfer a degree in advertising than engineering. Your post is pointless, irrelevant and is just rude to be honest why dont you go do some equations somewhere :shifty:

Personally im studying Advertising at UEL but im transfering to either Nottingham trent on the same course as you or Leicester at the end of the year. The course itself is actually really good but the university on the other hand isnt, campus is always dead, SU's closed every weekend :s-smilie: and generally quite un organised. Although the media department is alot higher than the rest of the uni about 55 compared to the universitys 100 ish so its a good course if you can stand the uni, hope this helps.

not at all. most firms like a student with a great knowledge capacity so they can mould them into HOW they want them to be, and not from what they learnt from marketing at uni. They usually headhunt students from top 15-20 uni's and PREFER people with harder degree's (engineering being a prime example). It shows their capacity to learn harder concepts and a proven academic background.
who would you rather employ? an Msc engineer grad from Imperial (and spend a few months training him into the finance world) or a business marketing grad from london met?(no offence to those who go there).
its a naive assumption to think that you WILL go into what you learn at uni, as 60+% don't and won't (real statistics)

Depends what aspect of the industry you want to go into, for management and that sort or work i agree with you but many advertising degrees focus alot real work experience and alot of internships giving you a foothold in a difficult industry to begin with. Especially the creative aspect of the media a degree in engineering isnt goign to help you creativly produce or edit a piece of work. Although personally im transfering to a more psychology related degree at Leicester. But your talking about finance and business marketing where as the original poster is talking about advertising and media, 2 completly seperate areas of study and work where as i agree with you in the business word i dont in the media world.

From talking to potential adverting agencys about what there looking for in a graduate for fast paced creative environment they're looking for personallity and experience which an advertsing degree would give you over say a degree in maths. Its also about showing a portfolio of existing work aswel im really interested in ancient history and also ecconomics but for the carreer i want they're not benefical to me. I intend to study further degrees at a latter stage as right now they wouldnt help get into the media industry which is what im assuming the original poster is looking for.

In PR every vacancy worth having looks for a candidate with some experience or as an even more basic quality, a degree in a relevant subject (advertising, PR, marketing) and the same applies for advertising, PR and marketing. I say this because I'm on a PR course and we looked at vacancies to work out what skills we needed to develop. These are the best vacancies taken from things like the CIPR websie, PR Week and Media Guardian.

If you want to slag off doing certain degrees research that specific subject group before you make sweeping statements please or if you don't want to do thorough research don't bother writing a post.

The OP asked which London Unis do the courses...I helped them out. It is not your place to slag off other people's universities or course.

Brunel do a few Media Studies courses, and is a higher ranking uni than any of the unis mentioned so far. It doesn't appear to do advertising, though.

thanks guys
I just put down anglia ruskin - i wont go there though, its a '5th' option. My choice will probably be University of Northampton.

Candy_Shop - thanks for your criticisms  but dont forget that to get into the media industry... contacts are a huge help, and I have them. I was only asking for quick advice on a london uni for a 5th option, not advice on a whole change in course selection.
