Maths at Oxford Brookes

Anyone here study maths at Oxford Brookes?

I quite like the city so I will probably be applying for Brookes but I noticed that it's got quite an unusual offer of BCD (with the B being in maths).

Do most students who study it actually hold such grades or are they usually more even (i.e BBB)?

What are Brookes maths students like?

I know that Oxford brookes isn't the most prestigious uni so that makes me wonder what the vibe will be like. I work better in an environment where everyone has a strong work ethic.

Honest opinions please....

To be honest i'd steer clear. Lincoln Falconer, my eldest brother, showed a huge deal of mathematical promise. quality on countdown, always got there within the 30 seconds. seriously always... even the rare times Carol would claim it was impossible Lincoln would still get it. He was that good. He worked out the area of Shoreditch in square miles, purely by using his sense of smell. Then he went to Brookes, fell in with a bad crowd, started smoking crack, and I haven't seen him for 3 years. It's a known fact OB maths dept. is a covert anarchic stronghold, dedicated to getting their students hooked on crack to an extent where many of them don't bother buying food now, they just eat their own faeces. More money for crack and that ennit

i've heard that too...
Ok i am currently a student in the business school and know 3 students who are set to graduate this year with firsts and 2-1's between them. One even switched to a maths degree while at brookes. The maths department is very challenging for many students. For the comment about falling in with the bad crowd has absolutely nothing to do with the maths department as a whole but ones individual experience.

Visit the univeristy and see for yourself. Brookes is not one of the most reputable univeristies but it is good.

I think that comment about crack was a joke by some idiot, I actually have an offer from Brookes to do maths next year, not sure if i'm going to go though because i haven't really spoken to anyone about the course, all i've found so far is this thread which until your comment was unhelpful to say the least. Do you know whether the maths department is any good, i hear loads about Brookes being great for business, management, etc. are there many people doing maths or is it less popular? Thanks, Freddy

Hey in contrast to alot of degrees you are less likely to hear about maths degrees as less people are taking the degree anyway. From what i have heard from people i know studying the degree its great. Every university has many strong points that arent highlighted because they are small departments. Maths is one of those departments that gets overlooked.

In terms of less popular i do believe maths is a less popular degree and the government agree particularly for maths teachers. This will actually make socialising with course mates alot better. You will form more friends instead of tons of acquaintances and a couple of friends. I have a few friends from my course which is one of the bigger courses but most of my friends come from my flat so there is 7 different degrees between us.
Go for it!! DON'T LET ME tell YOU what to do.

If you wanna be in the shadow of the OTHER university, then cool go for it. I wouldn't personally go to brookes though. AIM HIGHER.

Try warwick, Durnham other schools that are much better than Brookes. Even aim for the other much better known OXFORD UNIVERSITY.

Right because its so easy to just get into those universities. Brookes actually isnt overshadowed when you arrive in the city. Brookes has some of the top departments for certain subjects. The fact that we share things with Oxford University and there is a growing respect for each other.
