Thank you
I applied for Management. It was going to be either my firm or insurance.
Luckily Glasgow, which was in my top 2, gave me an unconditional so it's all good!
Btw, I see you applied for Business, which is your other option?

Congrats on your unconditional! Glasgow is an awesome uni!! I'm torn between it and Strath, in fact. :s-smilie:
Well, I'm certainly going for Management; from the other subjects I'll probably pick Economics, Finance...not completely sure yet.

Yes, it is great and I will probably firm it! Did you have an offer from Glasgow too?
Just firmed Pharmacy. Yawwws.

Yes, I received an offer from Glasgow as well, but the conditions are too high and I don't think I'd be able to make it. So I'll probably put Strathclyde as an insurance, anyway they are both my top choices.

Good luck!!

I wouldn't worry about this by the way, everyone will have known each other because there will be groups of people who have been let out of school on the same day to go to the open day. For example at my school about 20 people got let out for the Strathclyde open day, yet only like 3 people are actually going. Most people that would have been there would just have been using it as an excuse to get out of school for a day.

Ohh! Really?
Well, that gives me some piece of mind.
I hope there will be some other lone wolves though. I don't fancy the idea of approaching a group of friends already :P

Its my firm, first and only choice. I only used one UCAS choice and that was for Strathclyde as its the only place I wanted to go! :h:

OP, what course did you apply to? I'll be doing Chemistry with Drug Discovery.

Hello, I'm in my final year at Strathclyde studying Chemistry. You will find that for all three streams (F&A, Chemistry, and Drug Discovery) the classes in the first 3 years are very similar with only a few differences. This is really good as it allows students to change courses up till the beginning of final year, and I know a number of students who have switched between courses throughout my time there, including myself. I started on the F&A stream but changed after first or second year.

The department is excellent, very organised and has great support systems. I've had a fantastic time there throughout my degree and I'm confident you will too. Strathclyde was my first choice and I've never looked back! If you have any questions I'd be happy to answer any.

Good luck :-)

Thanks a lot. It's great hearing students who are very positive and enthusiastic about the courses and the uni in general and makes me feel more sure that I've made the right choice. I'm interested on what made you want to change from F&A Chemistry to Chemistry? Oh, how was your placement year?

Quick questions about first year: Will the uni send us letters before September about recommended books to buy and lab equipment? Also, seeing as I have never done physics, one of the people I know who is in first year of Drug Discovery says that I will need to do physics as my elective class so won't be able to choose anything else...is this true?

The main reason I changed from F&A to Pure Chemistry was because the F&A stream is very oriented towards Analytical Chemistry which I didn't particularly enjoy, and I realised I wouldn't like a career in that area. In final year everyone studies core chemistry classes and specialisation classes. I didn't want to miss out on the chemistry specialisation classes as I thought they would be more useful for my future career, and I definitely made the best decision for me and for what I want to do.

The placement year was really good. I worked on organic synthesis and had a great time and it opens your eyes to potential career possibilities etc.

I was in the same position you are in as I didn't study Physics even at standard grade. You will need to attend a physics class as an elective but you need to choose two electives (at least you did 4 years ago). My second elective was Use and Abuse of Drugs in Society and was run by the SIPBS department. You will find there is a range of choices, you can learn a language or do an business type subject etc. Though I have friends who chose a language and they take up way more time than other electives and they wouldn't recommend it.

From what I can recall they don't send you a book list or lab equipment as these are the kind of things they will tell you about on your first day. You will get a handbook and it will have all the information in it - you may get it before starting or during the welcome session. For the labs all you need is a lab coat, spatula, safety glasses and a lab book. You can buy the lab book and coat from the book shop next to the library and the spatula and glasses from the department. There is only one book that I can recall of that is compulsory and that is for a Biology class you will need to attend but other than that the rest are optional.

I'll be a lone wolf too, so far I don't know anyone else from my school or friends going to Strathclyde (though I do know some going to Glasgow). It's a scary prospect!

Which course have you applied for? I firmed Strath a few days ago

Also, where's everyone planning to go for accomodation? I honestly have no idea what to pick! Is there one more popular with 1st years?

I have absolutely no idea where to go. Halls would be affordable at a great location, but I'm not sure about with living a lot of people. Plus, I absolutely hate partying and all that nonsense and I don't know which hall would be the most quiet and calm. I like to sleep at nights and not wake up to the fire alarm. :/

Or then I'll try to find a room in a flat. It'd be nice to stay close to the uni on first year though.

I agree, I'm not into partying either, although I do think it would be best to live in halls, at least for first year. And I don't like the thought of ending up in an 8 person flat, I think it would be pretty crowded :s-smilie: then again, I wouldn't know!

Hello there fellow lone wolf!
I'm kinda coming up to Scotland for Wales, so I honestly don't know anyone there at all :P
I'll be studying law at Strath, providing I meet my conditional (I hope I do, Strath is such a lovely uni). How about you?
There are a few different places for accommodation. My bf is currently in one called 'Garnett hall' - it's alright actually, although he always complains :P
I won't be staying in student halls if I come up though.

Oh, so new country for you! That must be even more nervewracking :s-smilie:
I'll be studying Forensic Biology  (I can't remember if I already said it was an unconditional offer. But that's what it was :colondollar:) Is your condition difficult?

Garnett Hall is on my shortlist, of four options. I just need to get rid of one and then I can continue with the application. So far I can't decide how much I would value having an ensuite over the money I would have if I just went for sharing. :s-smilie: Decisions, decisions!
I haven't talked to anyone who aren't planning on living in halls for first year. Good luck to you in that venture!

Lol, yeah, it'll be a bit awkward at first I think. i'm just banking on being able to meet nice people who'll want to make new friends too :P otherwise I'm screwed.
My conditional isn't too bad, it's only AAB at a level. However, I'm just worried about you know, the amount I have to learn. I'm jealous of everyone who get unconditionals! Grr!

Well, if you don't mind sharing a shower/toilets with people, I'd definitely go for garnett hall. it's quite nice, and you do get a sink in your own room too.
And, if my plan fails on moving into a rented house, I might ask you very nicely if I can bring a box around to your flat and sleep in the corner :P

Haha! Same here. I hope I get along with whoever I'm put with in the flats, it would be much easier to make friends :L
'Cause I'm Scottish, I don't know how attainable AAB is at A Level, but very good luck! Though I don't have the pressure of meeting conditions, just the thought of what I have to learn for advanced higher Biology is weighing heavily on my mind. :s-smilie: tbh, I was incredibly shocked to get an unconditional, I didn't do that well last year, I don't think. But hey, I'm not complaining
Aww, of course you can! As long as it's a small box. And I may or may not let you put a toothbrush next to the sink.
