Regarding the whole idea about making friends at the campus (yes UCL has a campus) it's easy as long as you do not alienate yourself. If you are in halls it's gonna be much easier than in case of private accommodation.
Price-wise London is not the cheapest place to live, but it is still possible to have a decent social life without spending a fortune

Hi guys I will be entering UCL this year (September 2012) as an undergraduate student, and I hear there will be something called a fresher's week at UCL? Well thing is I would be 17 when I enter and won't turn 18 until March next year :frown: Will I miss out on a lot of things at fresher's week or even most of my first year?

I don't really mind not being able to drink. I just wanna be able to be there to socialise. Oh yeah and I'm an international student.
I'm stuck in exactly the same situation... except I turn 18 in next Feb

Wich country are u from??
You're not restricted to anything except not being allowed to buy alcohol or entry into clubs. Otherwise you can socialise loads during the day in your course/halls/societies. You can still drink alcohol with people in halls or where ever if you want, just can't buy it yourself. Clubbing is obviously a big part of freshers week and first year in general though, but if you don't mind not doing that then your age won't hold you back in anything. I know people who started at 17 and were fine.

Otherwise if you want to go clubbing etc, and I guess live the full freshers experience, maybe ask for a deferred entry and take a gap year?
Legally, you can't go to clubs or drink alcohol, but I reckon with a bit of inventiveness, you could manage both.

I try not to enter underage

Their parents generally don't like it...
I read the title as 'eating underage' :lolwut:

You can't buy alcohol but I reckon you friends will let you, or something like that.

I'm from Hong Kong

Nah that's not really an option at this point... I guess clubbing would have to wait? I wouldn't be too left out if I don't go clubbing right.......
can u apply to ucl nat sci with a medicine personal statement?
You'll be sweet. Worst thing that's going to happen is you don't get in a club. Your mates can buy you drinks at a pub or bar. It's not like people go to clubs every night.
Hello, I've applied for German and ab initio Russian (2012 entry), and I'm really struggling to decide between Durham and UCL for my firm choice. Would anyone who studies Modern Languages be willing to let me pester them with questions? I can PM you if you'd prefer. Thanks.

Thanks for answering, what do you study? I'd be grateful to talk to anyone, deadline's approaching and I can't make up my mind. :P

It doesn't matter what I study. I don't study German, so I can't help with anything specific about that. I am in the same department as you would be though, so I can only help with that, so if you have any department related questions, I'll answer them such as ELCS modules and other overarching things. I have done one module in SSEES too, but it wasn't a language module.

Before I came in 2010, all languages were a department of their own. Then they became SELCS, so they have the same general procedures now.

Quick question: after your first year is there a way to still stay in uni student residences. I once heard from an ex student if you volunteer as a monitor or something of the like you can be offered accomodation even at a reduced rate. Is this true and if so can someone explain the process and probablility of getting it.

Thank you so much.

Only postgrads can be vice wardens.

You can apply for accommodation in 2nd year. I don't know what the chances of getting it are, but there were a few 2nd and final years in my halls.
I've been accepted to the Economics w/ A Year Abroad program - I was just wondering what the selection process is for the universities you go to in the third year. I'm interested in 3, but I reckon they're the most popular ones. How much does your preference count in selection?

And also, this may seem like a stupid question, but how difficult do you rate the work load and content at UCL (specifically for Economics?). I'm coming from Canada and I feel that our schooling isn't as rigorous as at UCL, so sometimes I feel like I'm not prepared in that sense

"For UK-based students, UCL also requires a Modern Language GCSE at grade C or above for all of its programmes. If you are not studying a Modern Language GCSE this will not prohibit the consideration of your application. For students who do not have a Modern Language GCSE, UCL will provide opportunities to meet the language requirement once enrolled at UCL. This will be either through taking a 0.5 course unit in a language as part of the degree programme or through studying for a specially designed certificate."

Indeed, UCL will not disadvantage an applicant who does not have a GCSE in a modern foreign language. As above, students will be able to take part in a 0.5 course unit or a specially designed certificate once enrolled at UCL. Alternatively, applications for the language summer school are still open for one more week and are open to year 12's. If you do the summer school, you meet UCL's language requirement. Details are on the link below:

Hello, currently applying for accommodation and was wondering what the internet service was like in all the various halls and houses?

I've heard that some have data limits and that p2p is blocked. Does anyone have any info on which houses/halls have crippled internet and which remain untampered?

I know Ann Stephenson is ok with torrents. I'm at Astor and have pretty good speed with no blocks.

As a side note, my friend met head of IT services in a pub quite drunk and told her that as long as it's not anything illegal like certain types of porn I'd rather not name then he turns a blind eye to torrenting :colone:
