Freshers Week :-)

So this might sound weird but I'm not sure what Freshers Week is actually all about. I've heard several things including it's just a huge part week and that it's all about settling into your accommodation and learning about the learning facilities and your chosen course.

I'm so confused as to what it's all about as I'm not a party person at all, i'm slightly unsociable and I'm not into socialising activities (I like to get to know people my own way) :-)

So if anyone else is confused then welcome to my world and also if anyone wants to give us confused lot the low down on Freshers week then feel free to do so :-) :colondollar::cool:

I was speaking to my university mentor today and she basically told me its a week of getting to know people and kind of set up your own identity in uni. She said you can make yourself what ever you want, its also important to talk to everyone and anyone! Oh and there are some things you need to go to on health and safety at the uni  I suppose the best way for us to learn what it is, is for us to go experience it.

I can't speak for NTU specifically but freshers weeks are similar at most unis- during the day you have introductory talks, registration and time to explore and talk to flatmates. at night most unis organise club nights- a different one each night and sometimes alternatives for people who don't like clubbing e.g. a quiz, a trip to the city/town (sometimes these city trips are organised during the day as well), e.c.t. Most UK freshers, especially the 18 year olds, opt for the clubbing events during freshers week as this is their first time to let loose without their parents being around.

You should recieve a detailed timetable from NTU just before you start.
In my experience or Freshers here at NTU (done it myself and the 2 guys I live with were head reps this year); freshers week is going out every night, getting very drunk and sleeping all day. There are arranged activities during the day time, but the only people that really went on these were international students. A typical night in freshers will begin very early, about 6 or 7pm with predrinks, getting to know people in your flat and surrounding flats. You'll all be in fancy dress as every halls have a different theme each night of freshers. Then between 8pm and 10pm your fresher reps will herd you all off to your halls' allocated club for the night, you all go out, make fools of yourselves, have a laugh, meet so many new friends then reps help you get home after, whenever you're ready to leave. No one normally wakes up until afternoon the next day when you'll normally all get together with flatmates/nearby flats again to discuss the antics of the previous night. Then when your hangover is almost gone... it's time to get dressed up and do it all again!
On move in day, it's best to arrive as early as possible, because the queue for student cards and fresher wristbands can take up to 4 hours on saturday mid-late afternoon.

Omg you've just scared the living crap out of me :-o I'll probably end up with International students on the activities as going out and getting drunk (and even worse with people I don't know) is my idea of a nightmare. My mums been asking me recently what I want to do for my 18th and I have no idea as I definitely don't want a party and I'm not even sure I want a little get together with friends and families. If I do anything then the only thing I'll drink if anything will be the odd glass of champagne and that will be it. :-o

This is going to sound horrific and so rude but I'd much rather be unsociable than go out and get drunk then waste the next day away :-o

I'm the same as you! Going out every night drinking with randomers isn't really my cup of tea!
What uni are you going to?
Btw, for my 18th I went to the beach and had a bonfire and fireworks etc, in December

For my 18th I went out for a meal with friends (and then to the pub, but I'm guessing you wouldn't want to do that). All but one person I know now went to at least some of the freshers events even if they didn't like clubbing.

You might find you have to make a bigger effort to make friends if you don't go out clubbing with the majority of freshers

I'm not a clubbing/drinking person, but I went out every night in fresher's just to try it, and I actually had fun. I didn't drink much, therefore never had a hangover, and just enjoyed spending time with people and having fun with the music etc. Plus there should be lots of other events during the day, and there's nothing wrong with having a quiet night in mid-week in your flat if you need a bit of a break from it all.

But to be honest, going out and throwing yourself into it really is the best way to make friends. You never have to go clubbing again if you don't want to, and you don't have to get drunk, but I know I wouldn't have got talking to half the people if I hadn't gone out in fresher's.

Hey, I was the same in my first year, not wanting to go to all the clubs and drinking till I was ill, but there are plenty of events set up to get to know people in a more relaxed atmosphere. Whatever course your on will run team building but my best advice would be to get involved with a club that interests you. I'm a social secretary for the walking club and most of our fresher week events were held in pubs to give people the chance to meet new friends and I know a couple of the other clubs do the same relaxed kind of thing.
