I was wondering, would it be OK to mention books from Torey Hayden (special needs teacher) and/or Cathy Glass (foster carer)? I'm gonna apply to study psychology and I am especially interested in working with children, but would mentioning eg Torey Hayden's books look somehow tacky?

Yeh it might not look that good. Psychology at uni is more about writing essays based on theories/emprical evidence, rather then about working with children. IT would be relevant if you wanted to do education psych or something like that, but the tutors will want to know how interested you are in psychology and not children. But that's just my opinion i'd see what other people say/your psychology teacher says.

Hmm, I thought so. I have mentioned in my PS that I could see myself working as an educational or child psychologist though. Your opinion was appreciated, thanks.

You're better off talking about work experience/experiences with children that make you want to study developmental psych. Brave girl, it's my least favourite bit! :p:

You know what would be really good though, if you get work experience with children in a primary school or something like that, apply some psychology theories to what you have experienced. I.e. if you work with someone who has autism read up on it or read up on theories of literacy if you are working with children in english classes.

You have to look at it and sort of cross your eyes.

It looks a bit like a kangeroo though :p:

Those are very good resources!

In terms of TED talks - there are so many good ones, but this playlist covers some of the top mental-health talks: http://www.ted.com/playlists/9/all_kinds_of_minds.html and I would also add Ben Goldacre's witty talk http://www.ted.com/talks/ben_goldacre_battling_bad_science.html - lots of useful stuff on antidepressants.

Books: I'd agree about Mapping the Mind by Rita Carter, and anything by Oliver Sacks.. Not so sure about Daniel Dennett tbh unless you like dense philosophical tomes
A great biological psychology book, easy to read, is The Brain the Changes Itself by Norman Doidge and I'd also recommend anything by Malcolm Gladwell - short, interesting chapters, great to dip in to.

Blogs: The BPS Research Digest http://bps-research-digest.blogspot.co.uk is great for current/recent research
My own blog - Minds and Models (http://mindsandmodels.blogspot.co.uk) is more on classic research, with also lots of stuff on intelligence and creativity.
PsyBlog (http://www.spring.org.uk) is more populist but there's lots of good stuff there with links to sources.

Hope that helps
Todd Daniels' audio files are free on iTunes; they're brilliant. They're aimed at psychology degree students but you can use them for AS and A2 as well!

I've found Jon Ronson's "The Psychopath test" a great read as well. It's enjoyable but has some solid theory and a lot of context; useful for anybody studying forensic psychology or psychiatry. Anyone taking OCR Psychology AS doing dysfunctional behaviour and disorders would benefit as it challenges perceptions of illness and the subjectivity of psychological disorders.

The New Scientist is great for psychology news.

Here's a couple of blogs too:
http://ocra2psychologyg543.blogspot.co.uk/
psychorevision.blogspot.co.uk

Don't mention literature books in a psychology PS. And you don't have to read the whole book - read a chapter (or the journals I mentioned)

You're not going to be able to talk about the whole book, and they will understand that you won't necessarily be interested in everything in the book
