I have never done economics before and am stuck on how to approach this work:

Identify five key categories of spending by the uk government

Discuss whether this is a good idea for the government to spend more on the NHS

How to answer this? how much to write? and in what structure

This is so vague though, refer to your notes or text book. it would be defense spending or quite a few others. and for the second question its obvious. If they spend lots on NHS then they have to cut back spending in offer departments leading is inefficient use of government resources, and then again if its not spent wisely you get even more inefficiency.

Advantages:
Healthier workforce = more efficient workforce = more efficient britain.

Disadvantages:
Opportunity cost - decrease in spending on other services.
More efficient workforce = wage inflation.

Depends on:
Tax revenue gained by the government.
Change in the amount spent by the governemnt on the NHS.
