5 surely?

Edit: Oh. I think people assume it's a pentagon.

Why do most people get this wrong?
Memory? Assumptions? Reasoning? Misleading?

Seven (or two, depending on how you look at the question). Why, what do "most people" think it has?
or 9

50p - 5 sides
or hexagon.. they hardly ever guess 7 :/
Are you trying to allude to the fact that the edges of 50p coins are curved, and cannot be considered as "sides"? :s-smilie:

I would have thought most people knew it was approximately heptagonal?

In a non-pedantic mathematical view..
more on psychology, memory and why we guess/assume so

Most people who know have previously been asked this question and are aware of it

Why we guess or assume what, exactly? Do most people not say seven sides?

I mean it's clearly not an even number, and 5 just seems a bit too few...

not the actual question lol

Heads and tails. Two.

The answer could be 2, 3, 7 or 9 depending entirely on how you choose to define the word "sides".

Are we talking about 2D or 3D?

2D it's 7 sides
3D it's 3 or 9 sides

In my psychology class most people guessed 5 for a 50p coin and 6 for a 20p coin..
so you deduced rather than remembered the shape?
Nine? Without looking at any of the posts.
Just to help out a little for those getting it wrong:

2D it's 5 sides
3D it's 3 or 7 sides

2D in the most obvious sense
not trying to trick anyone lol
I knew it was 7. Fairly easy question isn't it? :s-smilie:
Well no, 7 sides is the correct answer. Anyone who says 9 is just trying to be clever - those sort of people are really annoying.
7 I just knew, it obviously has more thant 5 but not as many as 9, so 7 is the obvious answer.
