Seven (or two, depending on how you look at the question). Why, what do "most people" think it has?
Are you trying to allude to the fact that the edges of 50p coins are curved, and cannot be considered as "sides"? 
I would have thought most people knew it was approximately heptagonal?

I mean it's clearly not an even number, and 5 just seems a bit too few...

In my psychology class most people guessed 5 for a 50p coin and 6 for a 20p coin..
so you deduced rather than remembered the shape?

Just to help out a little for those getting it wrong:

I knew it was 7. Fairly easy question isn't it?
Well no, 7 sides is the correct answer. Anyone who says 9 is just trying to be clever - those sort of people are really annoying.
7 I just knew, it obviously has more thant 5 but not as many as 9, so 7 is the obvious answer.
