Syria is a socialist dictatorship, I don't see how their measures should be lauded. Egypt did the same thing and ironically Women came out in droves to protest against it.

Their government isn't really one to be held in high regards with respect to social liberties tbh. Though I have been to Damascus and the people are so incredibly warm and friendly, and the food and shopping... :sogood:

But as for this: "We have never gone to the extreme left or the extreme right" - Kinda al-Shammat, a law professor and women's rights activist.

Hmmm. :shifty:

This. A political stunt (appeasement) rather than a decision based on consulting Syrian students. I wonder if the Syrian females would be in favour of this

Turkey, Tunisia, Tajikistan and Morocco all banned the wearing of face veils in the classroom some years ago.
Not surprising.

Any increasing religiosity in the Syria is feared by the state.

PS. Amazing country.

Syria is in a delicate balance between the state and the Salafis. There are a lot of Islamic extremists of the worst kind in Syria, and if the intelligence services fall into that camp, the country will be heading to a very dark future indeed.
