Same here guys, I have a City's offer (HCI master)and a Glasgow's offer (IT Msc), I heard Glasgow is a better university but London is a great location for networking, any suggestions?

Hey @rachel HN, what choice did you end up with? I am in a quite similar situation. I have an offer from Strathclyde uni in Glasgow or City in London. Strathclyde is in the top ten for Economics but City is in London which is great for networking (City is also ranked 69th in complete uni guide for economics). I am not sure which one to choose.

City is a constituent college of the University of London (UoL).The University of London is a federal public research university. The university consists of 17 member institutions and three central academic bodies. The largest colleges by enrolment are UCL, King's College London, City, Queen Mary, Birkbeck, the London School of Economics, Royal Holloway, and Goldsmiths, each of which has over 9,000 students.

The UoL is a well respected university and world renowned.

City, University of London is a plate glass university (gained university status in the 60's). The term plate glass university or plate glass university refers to a group of universities in the United Kingdom established or promoted to university status in the 1960s (for example, Warwick, Bath, Lancaster, Essex etc.).

City, according to the recent REF, scores quite hilgy in research in the following areas: Business and Management studies, Mathematical Sciences, Sociology, General Engineering, Computer Science and Informatics, Law and Economics and Econometrics.

Finally, its business School (Cass) enjoys a good reputation and based on multiple ranking criteria scores quite highly.
I can not speak about the UG degrees but the PG degrees are well structured have a good balance of theory and application and the lecturers are knowledgeable. So overall very satisfied.
Very interested in what your experience has been at Cass/Bayes/ or just City uni for undergraduate studies. Could you share some more?

Hi @sdavis06 [br] [br] I hope you are doing well.

This is a subjective answer as students opinion will vary. I study LLB Law so I am part of the Law School so I can give you a perspective on this degree. The course is well organised and module leaders and personal tutors are always happy to answer any questions or queries.

The university also caters for students in terms of faith but it also provides part time job opportunities for students via Unitemps.

Let me know if you want to know something specific about the university and I will be happy to answer that.

Also let us not forget that City joined the federal University of London on 1 September 2016, becoming part of the eighteen colleges and ten research institutes that then made up that university.

This means that City has now full access to all the UoL libraries, the career services, joined research groups and seminars (although this is more relevant for PhD students and not UG students).

Finally the UoL is a well renowned university, City being a constituent college of the UoL means that its degrees are recognised internationally.

I haven't been to City yet, but I received an offer from them, AAA. I really like this Uni, and it's top 2 choices for me. However, I hear that although it's a very good university, and relatively well known in the UK (please correct me if I am mistaken), people in other countries outside UK probably haven't heard of the Uni before, and hence employment opportunities may be slightly lower.
I don't agree with this statement. City, University of London is known outside the UK. Obviously, it is not as prestigious as UCL or LSE but it is a constituent college of the University of London (UoL) similar to Royal Holloway, Goldsmiths, Queen Mary etc. and its business school Bayes/Cass is world renowned and consistently ranks very high.

City has a good reputation for the following subjects (note that the order has no meaning here I am just listing them): Business, Finance, Economics, Law Music, Journalism, Optometry and its school of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering offers decent degrees in engineering, computer science and mathematics.

Hi!

I'm currently a third-year BSc Business Management, Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship student at Bayes Business School.
My experience is great so far and I really enjoy my time here.

Firstly, I really like the way in which the theory is complemented by practice. This is either through various coursework or even through real interactions with existing businesses.
Secondly, I really like the variety of the courses and the fact that you can develop yourself in your area of interest.

Lastly, I really like the community at City and the fact that we have the opportunity to be part of several societies.

Please don't hesitate to ask any other questions.

Best wishes,

Being a constitutent college of the UoL is not what makes City's degrees recognised internationally. City's degrees were always recognised internationally for the simple reason it is a recognised and accredited university within England. However, whether City is 'renowned' is strongly debatable.
Obviously City’s degrees were recognized internationally even before it joined UoL. What I am implying here is merely the fact that by joining the UoL the degrees from City gain more recognition because it is now part of a world renowned institution where as before it was a plate glass uni with no strong affiliations.

Surely the fact that City joined the UoL must have some impact on its reputation would you not agree ? Finally it’s business school (Bayes formerly Cass) enjoys a very good reputation and usually places very high in various ranking lists.

Hi, I've got an offer for the exact same course and I have a couple of questions if you wouldn't mind answering.

How many hours of in-person lectures would you say there are in a week?
Are lecturers good with replying to emails about any issues or questions students may have?
What are you enjoying most about the course?
What's your biggest dislike of the course?
How are the facilities there?
How are they with setting up placements? (if you can answer)
How does the study abroad programme look? (if you can answer)

Thank you in advance if you do get around to answering these!

Hello, I hope you are well! My name is Abida and I am an official Economics Student Representative at City, University of London.

I have noticed that this thread has become quite active recently, so I will share my opinion on this as a current student.

In my personal experience, I have enjoyed my studies at this university. This is for a number of reasons: academics, career-wise, and socially. For my course, the modules are interesting and the lecturers/personal tutors are hugely supportive as well. Career-wise, the university has an amazing career service and links with employers (from their Careers Fair, Mentoring Schemes, Micro-Placement Programme, and Society Networks too). This has helped when applying for internships and graduate schemes, as you are well equipped in knowledge and skills (volunteering opportunities and part-time job offered by the university as well). Furthermore, being in the heart of London is great socially as well as professionally career-wise.

Please let me know if you had any other questions about studying at City, University of London and I would be happy to answer any questions.

Kind regards,
Abida

Although I studied as a postgraduate at Bayes Business School I believe my input to be valuable since some of your questions are relevant to anybody who is studying at Bayes.

The facilities at Bayes are great. It has a Bloomberg room, the cafeteria serves good food and is quite stylish and the library is top notch. Regarding placements Bayes has very good connections with the industry and many graduates land good jobs and internships.

I did not do the study abroad programme but from what I have heard it is a great experience and definitely worth doing.

Hi @BomAlabi!

I'm more than happy to answer these questions regarding my course.

1. When I was in my first year, I had about 2 hours per lecture. So, 8 hours in total but it might change.
2. Yes, lecturers are very nice and friendly and they usually reply very fast.
3. I would say the balance between theory and practice. I really think that our university balances these two very well.
4. I don't have a dislike about my course.
5. The facilities at University are great. All the buildings are situated very close, making it very easy to commute between them when you have lectures in different buildings. We also have our gym which is situated 5-7 minutes from the main campus. Also, there are many study spaces and cafes on campus where you can socialise and work with your colleagues.
6. If you are interested in getting a placement, the university will offer you the support you need to find the right placement.
7. Our university partners with many other universities from abroad. Thus, you have the opportunity to study abroad if you want to.

Hope this helps.

Feel free to ask me if you have any other questions.

Best wishes,

Some good news regarding City. The latest Research Excellence Framework (REF) results are out today. The REF, a sector-wide research audit held every six years that decides how about £1.6 billion of quality-related funding is distributed annually.

The results show that 86% of City’s submission to the REF was rated as being of world leading (4*) and internationally excellent (3*) quality. In particular City is ranked 39th in the UK out of 129 universities with an improvement of 12 places since REF 2014 (excluding specialist institutions). There were especially strong performances in Allied Health Professions, Business & Management, Sociology, and Music, as well as significant improvements across many other Units of Assessment.

See link here:
https://www.city.ac.uk/news-and-events/news/2022/05/city-university-london-recognised-world-leading-research

More specifically Bayes/Cass ranked 5th together with Warwick in the subject Business and Management. Here are the top 5:
Cambridge
Imperial
LBS
LSE
Warwick and City (got the same grade point average and are both tied 5th).

Analysis of the results (Overall and per subject) are published by the the times higher education here:
