I managed to get in by repeatedly spamming the Register, and then the Log In buttons on uplay (Didn't have an existing account so needed to do both). If you do it like 30 times in quick succession at least one of them should work. Make sure you set uplay to "start in offline" mode to make it easier the next time you log on. (found the tip on the Assassin's Creed forum on Steam)

Also on topic I'm playing Alan Wake American Nightmare because I got it for £2.50 in the Steam sale and though I eventually got AC:R to work and it was the game I wanted to play first... I don't like having multiple games on the go
