Right, I'm going to write a plan for this- Examine the reasons for changes in birth rates and family size since 1900

Firstly, I'd pick apart this question in to two parts- the reasons for changes in birth rate, which are

Changing position of women e.g liberation through employment.

Children are seen as an economic liability

Infant mortality rates have dropped (give reasons for this)

The idea of quality not quantity is more emphasised now

I'd also include that there were baby booms too, especially due to wars.

I would expand on the points above, and now tackle the second part of the question- reasons for changes in family size. Obviously, this decreasing birth rate would make families much smaller, and often more of a 'bean pole family'. BUT, I'd then try to link in the 'family diversity' topic with changes in family size, such as more immigrants means families can be extended (south asian families), more lone parent families (Afro-Caribbean families) as well as more lone parent families in general due increase in divorce rate, and also because of Cashmores research that the difference between children of lone parent families is very small to a children from a two parent family. I'd then expand on this idea, and include Rezedvous and Philips research. I'd then state the anti thesis of this argument, and state the family size is still the typical nuclear because as Parsons said, it is the best for socialisation, it does not create the 'dependency culture', as Murray said, and bring in some figures such as YouGov's study which found 75% of children in a lone parent family were more likely to fail school, have addiction problems etc.

You could even bring in industrialization and its effect on family size since the 1900s, and research by Parsons, Laslett, Finch and mason etc.

I hope I've helped

The questions are the 'examine' and 'access' can someone please give me some guidance on how to write a good essay. E.g. Access the view that it no longer makes sense to talk about the patriarchal family.

Hey everyone, I recently got awarded an A (5 marks off an A*!) in my Sociology A-level, and I know that at times it can be difficult, confusing, and people don't really know where the hell to start in their revision!

I took Families and Households, Education, Beliefs in Society and Crime and Deviance, along with the research and theory involved! If anybody has any questions, do not hesitate to ask as I really enjoyed the course and would be happy to help x

http://store.aqa.org.uk/qual/gce/pdf/AQA-SCLY4-W-QP-JUN10.PDF

Well let's take the June '10 paper. The exam is generally broken up like this, with 12 + 21 markers for crime, 9 + 15 for research in context, and 33 for theory and methods.

For the first question, I generally split my AO1 and AO2 evenly, slightly more AO2 though, I don't know if anyone else knows the exact break down on this first one? So 5/6 points on why females may be less likely to commit crime, 6 or more points backing it up with evidence or theorists, or counteracting it with other evidence and theories etc.

For the 21 marker, I think it's 12 AO2 and 9 AO1, once again not 100% but it rings a bell. Make sure you use the item, SOOO many people just forget to do that, though I'm sure you wouldn't. I use it twice usually just to show I've read that they want me to include it. After that, I branch out to other things from my notes, once again just using evidence and theorists to support whatever I'm saying.

Research methods are slightly easier, if it's 9 marks like this one and says give three problems, that's basically 3 marks per problem, so one mark for identifying the problem, two for explaining it. Dead easy to get full marks if you just know what is asked of you

What a lot of people do on the 15 marks when it asks for strengths and limitations is include far more limitations (apparently, that's what my teachers said anyway!) so it's important to include a lot of positives as well. I used to start with practical issues (time, money, location etc) then move onto ethical (consent, damage to participants, confidentiality etc) then theoretical (positivists vs. interpretivists) and 15 marks is earned before you know it! Obviously make sure you are continuously relating it to the question, for example this is discussing police attitudes so you need to say 'a strength in using PO in investigating police attitudes is that...' otherwise it's really easy to go off on a tangent stating 'PO is good because...' and not actually relating it at all back to the question

Finally, the 33 markers is 15 AO1 and 18 AO2, really go for it in this one! I don't really know how to help you on this one, it's usually just a very long debate of perspectives/theory etc and evidence to support this, you just need to know the topic well and different arguments surrounding this. x

i have this sociology exam on families and households for january 2012 AS Level exam, and found that i could only get 8/12 marks on the first 12 marker questions. the 1st essay question on family sizes, was very ambiguous, according to me, and i think i messed it up...instead of writing anything about ageism, birth and death rates, or even including the effects of the smaller family sizes, i just
put about :-

how divorce rates have gone up, and this has lead to smaller family sizes
lone parent families
new right and how they dont like single mothers as they see it as perverse incentives,
feminist movement since 1970's and 1980's has meant women can no longer depend upon their husbands and has created smaller fam sizes.
in my conclusion, i put "in conclusion, all these reasons have lead to smaller family sizes,....and postmodernists would argue...blah blah..." and thats it. i was working against time, and i just blagged on despite of knowing the material inside out.
however, the second question was good  it was on social policy, and i out about
divorce reform act
new right, charles murray, 1889 prevention of cruelty act, feminists view

so i dont know how much i have got right, and wrong. i really want a C/B in this, ........i know its a bit late for this discussion on exam paper, but im panicking since the results are only 16 days away! ;/

please guys, help me, ...:'( really desperate to know, what you think i might get or opinions on how much relevance i have included to the question? please???
thank you

BTW the 2 essay questions were :
1) examine the effects of and the reasons for changes in family sizes over the last hundred years or so, in the UK.
2) asses the ways in which social policies in the UK has effected family life.

Studying A2 sociology religion and beliefs.
practicing the Q' Evaluate feminist views on the role and functions of religion in society today. (33 marks)
(from the June 2010 exam paper)

I looked at the mark scheme and it said candidates can include Daly, Lyotard. These two are postmodernists i guess.

Wanted to use postmodernists to criticise Feminists in this essay. Would you guys be able to help me what Daly, Lyotard or other postmordenists say?

Thanks for your time guys in advance!
Hi, im studying the same units as you in sociology, i was just wondering if you could give me some tips on how to revise and how you wrote out your essay questions pls, especially for the 33 marks pls xx
