Hi, I was just wondering if there would be any point in me applying to Oxford.
I haven't done GCSE's, I did the MYP system which is like a prequel to the IB. So it's graded out of 7, etc. Everyone has to take the same 9 subjects and the coursework is sent off to IBO. There aren't entry requirements for MYP on the website but here are mine.
English- 7
Maths- 7
Science (Bio/Physics/Chem- separate exams but final mark is a cumulative one)- 6
Humanities (Geo/History- ditto, separate exams...)- 7
P.E.- 7
Technology- 7
French- 7
Music- 7
Drama- 7
So 62/63
Now I'm doing the IB and for the end of Year 12 my grades were:
Geo HL- 7
English Lang. and Lit. HL - 7
Music HL- 7
Maths SL- 6
French SL- 7
Physics SL- 7
However, I would want to study music at Oxford and I don't have a performance diploma or anything (I know it's not a prerequisite but am aware that many/most will be playing up to that standard) and only really play the piano. Recently did Grade 7 and just passed. Did grade 6 theory last school year as well and passed. Plan on doing G8 piano and G8 theory next year. I play the violin a bit but due to extenuating circumstances don't play very well. The same for piano. I lived in countries where I couldn't get instrumental lessons at all (or any sort of musical education) for 2 years. Then I moved and for 3 years had a bit of music tuition but still very limited. This is why my music background isn't as extensive as others would be.
Other music activities I am doing/have done:
Steel Drums club
Teaching piano
Composing music for school's drama production (The Tempest)
Work experience at only music university in E.Africa (Makumira Uni)
Extended Essay in music
Personal Project (part of MYP) on music. Composed several pieces for my project.
Choir
Played the timpani at Y13 graduation in orchestra (needed a timpani player last minute...not that I had ever even seen one until two days before we were due to perform)
Non-music activities I have done:
Climbed Pare Mountains, Little Meru, Mt. Kilimanjaro
Went to CERN, had master-classes, etc...
Involvement in school drama productions
Volunteering work (work at orphanages)
Published poems in three books
That's all that I can think of for now. Basically: do I have a chance? Especially on the music side as I know I don't have the same experience and performance skills that most will have. However, the music course is mainly an academic one, so hopefully...
Thanks so much : )
