Nuclear Ambitions of North Korea

The UAE would like to get the MUN to turn its attention to the situation of North Korea and their nuclear ambitions. As we know from secret insiders, the population of North Korea are starving due to their intolerant government. The UAE would like to see change in this oppressive regime. However, there have also been reports that the North Korean Leader has visited China for economic reform. What do other countries think should be done regarding North Korea?

Malaysia is concerned with the nuclear ambitions of North Korea, and hopes that talks will resume soon. Malaysia would like to stay away from military action until it is deemed ABSOLUTELY necessary.

Cuba sees a nuclear Korea as being a sad but inevitable fact until it can regain a long-term trust-based relationship with the outside world.

Kim Jong Il's 64th birthday is on the 16th of February. Anyone wanting to send him special birthday wishes (like "that you'll stop arming your people and start feeding them") can send them through the Friends of the DPRK at [email protected]

Well, isn't it a bit late now really?

Australia believes enough is enough. North Korea has toyed with the world and its security for long enough - creating and pulling out of talks only is hope of greater aid, not to cease its nuclear activities.

Therefore, Australia is calling for the matter to be refered to the UN Security Council.

China does not believe it should be referred to the security council yet. China would prefer to see six party talks resumed.

China sees it's importance in this task, and assures the US and other countries that it's goal is to disarm nuclear weapons too, but we differ in our approach.

The Republic of Sierra Leone once again makes it clear that it is the right of a state to possess nuclear weapons, but feels that the DPRK should consider talking with other UN nations.

Germany is also suspicious of N.Korea's nuiclear plans. It observes that alot of attention has been placed on Iran's nuclear program, yet North Korea's seems to have been ignored.
Germany supports Australia's idea yet recommends that the case be first presented to the General Assembly.

The Kingdom of Belgium will like to highlight the double standards practised by United Sates of America in ignoring nuclear weapons possessed by Israel and North Korea while pursuing sanctions and possible military response against Iran. The Kingdom of Belgium will reiterate that the world community must take an even handed approach in tackling all rogue nuclear states.

By being raised here, surely it IS being presented to the GA.

EDIT: More to the point, the issue of starving its own citizens is not the UN's turf. That's interfering with internal policy - something we cannot do according to our charter.

I meant that there should be a poll for the GA to decide on whether to refer N.Korea to the SC.
Japan worries about this situation and feels that it is of some concern, therefore we urge the re-start of the six-power talks, and if these fail, referral to the Security Council.

China joins Japan in calling for a return to the six party talks.

Australia notes that genocide can be illustrated as an internal matter. So the UN should not interfere in these such cases either? If North Korea starves its people because of its practices, surely it is still the matter for the UN.

China and Japan: The 6 party talks have not unsucessful - they have stopped and started with little progress. All talks with N. Korea have failed. The situation must be refered to the GA, at least.
That is true, and regrettable, but the UN charter nevertheless forbids interfering with internal policy. I suppose a GA motion could alter that state of affairs if passed - so if Australia feels strongly about it, that is always an option.

Similarly, if any country feels strongly enough about North Korea to want an SC referral, nobody's stopping that country's delegate calling a poll like the one about Iran.

China is a keen supporter of the six way party talks. We have been in discussions with the US and we have come up with several ideas which we are not prepared to divulge at this time, and also Kim Jong Il's recent visit to China has lead him to vow to cooperate with the six party talks. China believes a referral now would only inflame the situation, just as progress is just starting to be made with the six party.

Greece sees North Korea's current regime as a significant threat to world security - all actions must be taken to ensure that Pyogyang does not gain weapons of mass destruction. China must cooperate on such matters

China is cooperating, we are on the United States' side on this one, the US and China both agree it is best to carry on with six party talks.

The Republic of Sierra Leone agrees, feeling it is necessary to carry on with the Six Party talks, to ensure a safer world.

The Netherlands agree that Six Party talks must continue in order to ensure global safety.
