Ahh... Then you can describe me perfectly in Korean.

The video where I learnt it from wwas hilarious. It involved crossdressing and dancing.

It's a fun problem...it's a relatively simple problem with a bit of judicious calculus (and I believe Lagrange multipliers may also work with an implicit equality). I'm looking for a non-calc solution ATM...perhaps some kind of creative formulation in spherical geometry?

There is a nice pictoral solution. Nice to know there is amongst us a powerful enough mathematician who can find an alternative solutions though .

It was one of those moments where I realise I would find a maths degree boring in parts.

I'd imagine all degrees had their boring parts

lol. SO what was it you'd like to study- some kind of engineering? I was thinking about ur string problem last night. By any chance does a solution involve centre of masses? Or maybe I have to think in terms of focuses and directrixes.

Chemical Engineering. Nope. It's more of a physics than geometric problem.

For STEP do you need to know C3/4?

I'd say yes, if only the integration and differentiation, as there are plenty of calculus questions that you couldn't do without C3/C4. There are of course a lot of others you could choose from, but personally I find I can usually get a lot further with the calculus questions than the more abstract stuff that only requires C1/C2 (though I can still rarely complete a full question so maybe I'm not qualified to say lol)
Does anyone know some fancy maths used in economics? Apart from game theory.

lagrangian optimisation.
Some statistics like regression analysis.
Lots of differentiation.

Yeah I've heard of Lagrangian stuff. It's about finding points on a 3d graph right? It'll take a bit of research to fully understand it seems. And I know differentiation is used in profit maximisation etc so I'll probably talk about that in my PS.

Not necessarily 3d. It's just finding the maximum or minimum of some function f(x), given a set of constraints c1(x), c2(x)...cn(x). For instance the objective function could be x^2+y^2 and a constraint could be x+y=10.
Used in lots of things like profit maximisation or cost minimisation.

Did we ever confirm the answer to the second John's question on their example entrance test?

JEEZ, I was about to be like STEP and an entrance test, are you kidding me?!?!?

Phew.

Back in the good old days you could sit a particularly difficult entrance exam, on which had you done well enough, you would've got an unconditional offer and a scholarship

Sorry, but I don't quite understand what you are trying to say with the first part of this post.

Oh they're just all the notes I've made for my PS, the top part is the Unis I'm going to apply to. I really should get started on this damn thing but... :boring:
