Where is the best place to study languages?

I'm really interested in languages and the culture of other countries. Can people let me know their experience of studying languages and related courses? Thanks.

I've just finished my first year at Sheffield studying Chinese with Japanese (bit out there I know) so I'll do what I can to help you.

At Sheffield, if you choose a single honours course, you get roughly 8 hours language per week, but will also have additional culture modules on top of that, which cover economics, literature, history etc, whatever takes your interest.

Sheffield is also very good with regards to helping with the year abroad, which is an essential part in any language course. For my course, we got given a booklet which contained a list of what we had to do and by when, which we all found very helpful in keeping on top of what we've had to do.

If you have any more questions, just drop me a PM

I think it depends on the language(s). I'm going to study Italian, and I've looked at the league tables, but I've also looked at the individual universities. It also would matter what exactly you wanted out of your education.

Well I enjoy French at school and also do Spanish. But I would like to look further afield. Possibly to far eastern languages. Would I need experience of these before I apply? Does anyone on here teach themselves?

If you're interested in the culture, try and pick a uni that includes culture into their language courses. A lot of them actually don't. My uni does, however, that's in my department for European languages, and as far as I know, the only other language you can do (aside from the European ones of Spanish, Italian, French, German and Catalan from second year) is Chinese.
Have you looked at SOAS?

SOAS and SSEES but it depends what language you're after the two former ones well they specialise in what their titles suggest.

From what I understood, the OP was looking at far eastern languages - not eastern european languages. :holmes:
