Good Unis for English Degree

I think I've settled with myself that Id like to do some sort of English degree at Uni and was wondering if anyone had any good unis to research? I've done my own large chunk of research but I'd also like some opinions (I do online a levels and they don't discuss uni with you ofc, and no one I know finished even college, so I have no one personal to ask).

Any and all opinions/contributions would help a lot!! Im looking for unis of varying degrees (ie one with lower ucas points for entry requirements, middle and higher)

I would consider these points whilst choosing

- Location eg. do you want to live in a big city or smaller town? do you want to stay close to home?
- Course structure : what modules will you be taking and do they line up with what you’re interested in?
- Campus vs city based university
- Sports & extra curricular activities / societies they offer
- Teaching quality and student satisfaction
- Career progression & opportunities

Royal holloway & York are supposed to be strong for humanities

Hi!

My name is Ellie and I am a third year English Language and Linguistics student at the University of Sheffield. It sounds like you're definitely on the right track with researching Universities; it is an important decision and requires a lot of careful consideration. A lot of Universities, Sheffield included, will offer a reduced offer if you have undertaken additional qualifications, e.g an EPQ. With regards to contact hours, these may vary depending on the modules you take. In my second and third year at the Uni of Sheffield, all modules are optional (you can tailor your degree and specialise in what you are interested in) which results in a varied amount of contact hours, but on average they tend to be between 6 and 8 hours a week.

I have had a brilliant experience on my course so far, so if you have any questions at all, feel free to ask me anything! What area of English specifically are you most interested in?

I hope this helps!

Ellie (3rd year English Language and Linguistics student)

Hi

I think it's great you're doing your research in choosing a Uni, because they all obviously have different requirements and course structures.
I can put the link for our English BA course which is one of the more unique courses out there and I encourage you to check us out: https://www.uos.ac.uk/study/ba-english/
My experience with the English team here at Uni of Suffolk has been great so far!

Hope this helps!

Hello!

I think when deciding on a university, the most important thing to look at is the course structure and content. Decide on what is it that you would enjoy studying and look through the course programmes of a variety of unis: sometimes a course might jump out to you.
I also agree with previous replies in that it is very important to consider location and other opportunities the university offers. Attending an open day (online or in-person) after you've narrowed down your options is also helpful for making a decision that will make you happy.

As a 2nd year student at Lancaster university, I have really enjoyed my time here, as the university offers great practical courses, good career support and so many extra-curricular opportunities. Lancaster has a big range of English-related degrees. For example, here is a link to the English Language course: https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/english-language-ba-hons-q304/2024/. Lancaster is great for Lingustics (top 10 in the world and 2nd in the UK according to 2024 The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide), English, Creative Writing and other humanity degrees (it is placed 6th for English by The Guardian). It also has fairly reasonable grade requirements, typically AAB or similar. The best part: many optional modules to choose from, which allows you to customise the degree to your liking! Second best part: accessible careers support. For example English Language offers a placement module where you get real work experience organised by the university without having to take a year in industry. And we have a great careers team that organise multiple CV/interview workshops and provide personalised career support appointments.

So yes, definitely think about what you would enjoy doing the most and explore many options before narrowing down your choices. It also might be a good idea to apply for a slight variety of degrees and universities (e.g. English Literature at Edinburgh and English Language and Creative Writing at Lancaster).

Hope this helps and best of luck!
