Hey, what a pleasant first post I'm about to make here.

I'm currently soiling myself over the prospect of this exam tomorrow... I really wish I'd not taken this subject. It's done nothing but sap any interest I had in history before I took it at A level.

I have looked all over the place, in books and asked for advice .. but everyone says different things. Nobody seems to know how to answer source questions, in fact most people seem to contradict eachother as has been seen in this thread...

This is also the fourth year in a row I've studied Russia, I'm doing the unit on Russia under stalin/post lenin.

I also found I cannot answer questions based on sources. 90% of the time sources don't seem to relate very well to the question, and it's next to impossible to expand on an answer based just on the source.... arrrgghhh I'm so scared !!

Good luck to everyone tomorrow though...

Alex

Hehe! Aaaw try not to stress too much.

I'm doing the same as you; Stalinist Russia etc, so if ya wanna exchange ideas or anything, then let me know and I'd be happy to. Might be some good revision for both of us

Lol hey. Yeah thats probably a good idea. At the moment my brain is about to explode due to it's saturation of textbook words which dont necessarily mean anything....

Oh well, maybe it'll all make sense tomorrow
Your heads are going to explode out of knowing things, mine is going to explode because of the lack of knowledge.

Anyway,

How much revision have all you guys done for this? Also, the bummer paper is on friday - that is going to be a killer! lol...no looking forward to tomorrow or friday!

Not actually revised that much.. got up at 6 this morning cos I thought I could get some extra hours of revision in. But it turns out that I've just spent those extra hours, either eating or chatting on the phone, or on TSR!

So yeh, not that much revision, but I'm hoping the sources will refresh my memory!

I know what you mean about Fri - I have 2 exams in a row that morning and they're such annoying exams!

Hmm yeah I know that feeling. I always find myself getting so distracted while revising... especially if its last minute. Right now I'm just trying to re-read everything in my book again and try to remember it. The more I do that though I seem to panic.

Well this time tomorrow it'll all be over...

I posted this in another thread, but I'll do it here as well.
Anyone got anymore info about comparing Stalin with Lenin, like, did Stalin subvert or destroy, or preserve Lenin's legacy? I know its about Socialism in One County, but anyone got anymore info, and what kind of **** to put in the questions.

Also, yay for Biffy Clyro username.

One more question. When you write a paragraph of a particular point, you've written your key sentence, evaluated it, backed it up with sources and shown where sources agree and disagree.. then written a concluding sentence.. do you have to then counter your conclusion?

I dont think its too important to show where sources agree or disagree, ive never done that (please feel to correct me if im wrong tho)

and then in answer to your question, as long as you've got some kind of argument against ure point, how other historians may interpret the event/action in your paragraph just do a short conclusion and then just move on. cos of time restraints you dont need to keep arguing against all the time. just make sure u know your argument and then put in other ways to look at it.

confused? probably, i write rubbish haha.

I thought that was the point of the whole exam

Do u directly say this source contradicts this source, I mean I know you are arguing there different points but do u actually have to say
"source A does not support source B"
Well if you're doing everything else correctly, then comparing sources can definitely push you into a higher grade.

Um yeah, might be good to make yourself clear, can't see any harm in doing that.

PS I have the Hitler-Nazis exam tomorrow... aaahhh!

anyone else doing the chartism paper for unit 6 tomorrow?

i have no idea what to do with the sources, source papers have always been my weak point, and when i tried to do a paper earlier i had no idea how to put in stuff to do with the sources disagreeing with my points! (sorry if this doesn't make much sense, i'm panicking!)

I am doing the mid Tudor Crisis too...
I did it last year as well but that didn't go too well.
Anyway, hopefully tomorrow will b ok but haven't done that much revision... I always think the sources will refresh my memory!!
Definitely analysing sources is key - your own knowledge should just weave its way in anyway. So hard to find practice questions for source papers!!
My downfall is running out of time / spending too much time on question a).
Anyway, good luck everyone!!

hi need some help please!!

i was looking at bthe edexcel mark scheme and it says for part b:

well selected range of knowledge to debate the question as an historical interpretation. what does that mean?

also what is contemporary and secondary evidence. also says we should seek to reconcile conflicts. what does this mean?

also just to confirm, we shudnt luk at the nature origin and purpose of the sources?

thanks!
