What communication protocols are necessary for the internet to transmit and exchange data.

The most common communication protocols are

HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol)
-This is commonly used for web communication, it essentially allows a user to connect to a server using a client. Operates at port 80

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol)
-This is commonly used for sending and receiving emails. Typically works at port 143

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
-Similar to IMAP, used for electronic mailing. Typically works at port 25.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
-Used for transferring files across a network(s). Typically operates at port 1023

Ethernet
-Ethernet is cabling used within a wired network in order to exchange data across a network.

Token Ring
-Token Ring is a widely used protocol used within a LAN based network using a ring topology. Users on the network must receive something known as a token to receive and send data on a network.

TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol)
TCP/IP is what drives the internet. It is what enables a user on a client/server network to be able to exchange data. Every computer that is connected to a network is assigned an IP. An IP is what is used to identify a device on a network. For one computer to be able to send or receive data to another computer they will need to be assigned an IP.

The communication protocols which are used/implemented will usually depend on the data being exchanged on the internet.

If you would like further in depth descriptions or would like more examples of communication protocols then please, send me a PM.
