The Student Room Group

freshers/Do people actually talk to you in halls ,is my expectation unrealistic?

When it is freshers week, most people are the the communal area right or not? I ain't too sure how it works.

Is it usually most extroverted people that are in the communal area chatting away or does anyone see any quiet...introverted type people [girls, I am a girl so rather know about girls]

I expect people to be chatty in the shared kitchen and would always be smiling and wanting to talk- and that is the kind i plan on socialising with. But i do not drink and don't plan on partying unless i know people?

But is that really how it is or not? Do girls clique alot to each other instantly?

Would like opinions from people outside london and more midlands area

Really? Are you quite extroverted?
the first night in my halls there was a MASSIVE party in the carpark all night and for the rest of the week we mostly hung out in our kitchen getting to know each other with other people randomly wandering in and out.

I didnt find anything really got cliquey until about a week or two into my course, and my best friends at uni were the ones I made around christmas, not necessarily right at the start of the year.

I started university with awful social anxiety, but I am more extroverted and able to socialise now.
I think people are generally chatty from my experience, even if they feel insecure on the inside, not cliquey actually, people do mix a lot during freshers

So what did you change about yourself in order for you to speak to others? What situations did you put yourself in? I would like to know more because it kind of reminds me of me.

It wasn't so much about me changing as a person, I never changed myself as a person because that wouldn't feel right. Instead it was about learning how to deal with my anxiety and panic attacks and learning to become more comfortable around new people. I still struggle to make friends or talk to people on my own but if I am meeting new people with my friends I am very much an extrovert....alcohol helped as well

So what is a fresher fair all about?

talking to new people? yeah. It was fine, everyones new so everyones scared. It's a bit weird putting yourself out there and getting to know new people but it was enjoyable too. Everyone is in the same boat so that does help.

freshers week in general? no. My dad turned 50 during it and I was pretty upset about not being able to say happy birthday in person. Also I lived with a complete nightmare but that was unavoidable really. If it hadnt been for these two things it would have been completely fine
Is 'not-drinking' going to effect your socializing much in halls?

IDK, just put that as a disclaimer because people give answers like 'drink and it will be fine' :]
No I didn't really find it so easy. The most important piece of advice I can give you is to try and fall into a routine as soon as you can with lectures and self study and meal times and society things, that will really help you I promise !

What do you mean by this?
I have developed some sort of nervousness when I am around people in a setting where I know i am suppose to be socialising or people are expecting me to talk. I just know from my experience I would like to make friends and get to know people. I will have my studies organised i don't plan on bunking lol

yeah I did. I signed up for the doctors and stuff. I REALLY recommend you go to it, if only for the free pizza and stationery :P I'm starting a new uni next month (Eeep!) and I'm definitely going to go to the fair. Even if I dont join anything, the freebies are worth it

Details!

oh god. Um, well she got arrested in our halls for kicking the kitchen door down when she was drunk. She spent the first week asleep on the sofa in the kitchen because she didnt like her room. She once ran out of alcohol so started drinking mouthwash. 4th night of freshers I accidentally left my room unlocked and I returned to find her asleep in my bed. I was out of the room for literally 30 seconds. She overdosed on vodka and iron tablets and got taken to hospital in an ambulance and she nearly died from it :s-smilie: and she was an alcoholic and I still cant believe I didnt punch her :topic:
