Original post by dmcque
Hi!

I really want to get into Edinburgh..... So badly!!!!

Could you explain the waiting list to me please?

Thanks in advance

They have a waiting list?? How does this work?
I'm not looking to apply for university at the moment but I was wondering if there are any success stories for people who want to study medicine, preferably at a University in or around London?

I'm at UEA (University of East Anglia)

I really love it, it's small enough that you do see familiar faces wherever you go but big enough that there's new places to find and explore- like the donkey sanctuary behind the lake

socially- there's a lot of societies covering almost everything so you'll meet people with the same interests; there's a number of clubs in town with student nights and there's also 2 student nights on campus- each tuesday is a fancy dress theme and saturday there is more retro and cheesy music.
The LCR also hosts a number of bands e.g. Paolo Nutini, Ben Howard, the 1975, years and years. Radio 1 Big Weekend was opposite the sportspark on campus (albeit in the middle of exams)

subject-wise: there's a lot of freedom in second and third year which gives you a chance to go down a more specialised route if you so wish. I'm going down more the clinical and molecular route. Due to the hours of my course the school as a whole ends up being very close to each other and getting on very well. The lecturers are lovely and very approachable and are lovely when it comes to getting research experience

UEA is my firm choice and I absolutely fell in love with it when I visited on the applicant day! It's great to hear from others who are already studying there!! I'm kinda terrified at the prospect of not getting in though - this is my dream course (History) and the location is so idyllic and calm... I've heard so many fantastic stories about it from my teacher that studied there (she recommended it to me and inspired me to check it out) - I've gotten so excited about Norwich and UEA, and I just don't know how I'll be able to cope with the crushing disappointment if I don't quite make it! Hopefully it won't come to that though!! *touches wood and crosses fingers* (I'm superstitious and don't want to jinx anything :colondollar:)

I need AAB to get in... but I'm praying that there'll be some leniency there... I've got friends who know friends that have gotten in with lower grades, which I suppose gives me some hope. I'm confident in how all but one of my exams went. As an absolute worst case scenario, I'm looking at getting either ABC or BBC, but being realistic, I think I'll end up with either ABB or AAC. One or two grades isn't the end of the world, right? I know it's still nothing to be sniffed at, and a lot of people would love to get those grades, but for me it'd be hugely disappointing. :s-smilie:

Hey! Glad UEA is your first choice it's a wonderful place to study at.

My housemate last year and flatmate during my first year is a history student. If I recall correctly she missed her offer and got BBB. I know people on my course have gotten in with BBC

Thank you both so much! You've given me some more hope! I remember the staff being especially friendly... it was one of the things that stood out to me about the UEA. They were so approachable and down to earth - quite different to certain lecturers that I'd spoken to at other university open days. If memory serves me correctly, one of them talked to a group of us and said that if we didn't quite make the grades, we need only give them a call and they'll "make the magic happen".

lilGem - I don't particularly want to hijack this thread with lots of questions, so would it be alright if I PM'd you? I'm just curious about how freshers works and the whole moving in process at UEA... it all seems a bit daunting right now to be completely honest. I know I need to get over the hurdle of actually getting in first, but I can't help but think ahead!

Does anyone still get into Oxbridge if they miss the offer by a grade?

Posted from TSR Mobile

I have seen 2 Oxbridge success stories so far  cant remember which page though! Sorry! (Maybe somewhere between pages 5&10?)
I got AAB (two marks off the A!!) so I missed my offer from Imperial (AAA) to study Biology. It was the first B I ever had in a final result so that may have helped them still accept me, but I know a lot of friends I have at uni also missed their offers by one grade so they don't seem so worried about it. A lot of my old school friends also missed their offers and were still accepted. I had a friend who wanted to do Education and Maths and got a D in Maths (they asked for a B) and she was still accepted. Basically if you have an offer you're probably going to get in unless your results are completely different to what you got last year

Good luck everyone!

I've just finished my first year doing Biology at Imperial!

I got AAB (missed by two marks!!) and they still let me in, and a lot of people in my class missed out on their offers by one grade as well so I wasn't unusual. You're lucky because they're a lot nicer to Biology students at Imperial than other subjects because far fewer people apply for it (compared to the other subjects).

Good luck! The course is fantastic so I hope you get in

I really want to study History at Edinburgh but my friend went to East Anglia and loved it and they let her in with a grade lower....... It all just depends on how everyone else has also done in the exams.

I really hope you get into East Anglia..... Its a great university!!!!
