Different ways we discover drugs

Hi there, I've been given an essay where I have to talk about the different ways drugs were discovered, and how (so elaborate on each technique). I was wondering if anyone could help me with this please? I know one way is through natural products such as plants and herbs (and could I perhaps talk about Chinese meds ?), but there obviously must be more ways, and they're all really confusing (the ones on wikipedia). It roughly has to be 1 and a half pages long (It's not really that important, like it doesn't count towards my final grade or anything, but still it's good to do to a good standard). Does anyone have any idea what else could I write? Thanks a ton

The key to doing well is not by writing down ideas people give you on here, it is finding good quality information and research on the subject.

Just do a little googling and read some documents. Here's a few I found that might get you started:

Drugs are typically discovered through scientific research, so you can look at the origin of certain drugs but also how new ones today are brought into existence and into the pharmacy. I'd need your actual title to interpret what the question is asking - drug discovery today is quite a uniform operation, but you might also want to look at how drugs and medicine were discovered before the scientific process, or at the early beginning of it.

I have a book on 'inventions' - in it gives details about how certain drugs such as penicillin were discovered, perhaps try googling something along those lines. Or you might try finding certain drugs we've had for a long time, that are fundamental (such as penicillin) and who discovered them and how.

Another way is computational chemistry and such. Maybe read into that.

That's good then - look at how the modern scientific process works and explain this with reference to examples. So we don't really want to be looking towards the past for this question but current techniques in which drugs are discovered. Good luck!
