Formal and Natural languages

or something like that.. i did mine back at the end of year 12.. i'm in Y13 now..
Did mine on truths in literature vs other areas of knowledge...question 5 in fact.

Btw, any ideas for a cool presentation topic (preferably nothing to do with sciences:smile:)
there was already a thread like this back last year when I did my presentation but it's disappeared into oblivion now I think (should have been a sticky).

anyway, I did mine on the ethics and emotions around saviour sibling technology. cant remember the exact title. there was a more precise title than that.

my partner and I are doing

"when does 'art' become 'pornography'?"

and we get to tak about banned authors and banned films and cultural relativity (like how Jane Austen is banned in Iran, i think) and it's going to be SO much fun! We're getting extracts from books and asking people to say whether they think it's art or porn, on a sliding scale of, say, one to ten, and then we're going to shock people. Oh, it's going to be great!

I did "What is real" and involved history, biologi, physics and language, aswell as perception by quoting the Matrix. Also showed some illusions on the projector to prove my point that everything you see cant be trusted...

and o
used language to prove that people interperet the same thing differently

got top marks to hinted my teacher :p:

Jane Austen is banned in Iran? I can't see any reason that it would be banned for anything anywhere. It mean, it's soooo English, how could it be banned for anything cultural (and in a country like Iran?). As for porn...there's not even any kissing in Jane Austen.

I reckon that it might be banned becuase of the way that Elizabeth goes against a mans will and follows her own heart. e.x saying no to mr collins

Me and my partner did the presentation on a topic "How can we know that terrorists are evil". I think it's quite a popular topic - interesting as well as rather easy to do, lol. But since we were the first ones to choose it in our year, only we could do the presentation on terrorism

well our school does the TOK presentations in the first year of IB and the essay in the second year.
but my partner and I did our presentation on the legalization of prostitution. the TOK presentation is fun--plus, its not hard to get a good grade. We got an A on it, and it really was quite a breeze.

..now the TOK essay is a whole different story =S
yeah. the presentation is just a matter of getting your facts and argument straight and lay out all the views in an organised way. its not so much of the abstract TOK stuff like the essay
Any1 got ideas about this topic: "the concept of beauty in women"..i mean u can say so much, but still want some opinions..
it's a little clichéd, I have to say. I would say you need to get your specific argument very clear, and try not to deviate from it too much, because digression can weaken an argument or presentation.

that said, I do think that the topic is a little formulaic. Beauty through the ages, Reubens, flappers, marilyn monroe, twiggy, kate moss; eating disorders; cultural relativity- Fiji; modern western society: cosmetic surgery, rachel zoe, kiddy beauty pageants bla bla bla.

bla bla bla. It's very easy to do well on, but since everybody knows all this stuff already it might be a little boring.

If you could find a new angle, though, that's the money shot.
meta - yeah, women's beauty is a bit of a cliched topic but really it should really matter if you give a good argument and specific topic. after all it's your teacher who will be marking you.
a girl at my school last year did this topic and she did a really good job on it actually. she focused on the tradition of foot binding in ancient china compared it with modern comestic surgery.

thanx 4 advice guys. :p:
i know its cliched, but i do find it honestly interesting and what we are doing is focusing on mimetic desire and fashion, so thats quite original i hope. Basically we decided to talk about how partially beauty is defined by conventional fashion trends and why we desire to have certain things in the first place. we were also thinking of talking about the 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' idea, but then thats def overused:smile:
I remember doing one on Nationalism.
It wasn't exactly very original but we did manage to cover lots of things in it because we did a sort of Nationalism through history thing and got to talk a lot about history and politics. So it included ethics, fallacies in nationalist speeches and little discussion like egoism and altruism from different points of views.
I don't remember exactly how it went but I do remember we made the mistake of allowing the discussion to broaden way too much, so if you decide to do this one too, specify it to one event where nationalism was very present.
 hey all now i need some help...
hmm so tok superviser hates all ur ideas so now he wants us to do propaganda...
i am going to look at it from a psych perspective and my partner in history...

how can we phrase this into a topic??? and make it tokish

any suggestions would be LOVED:biggrin:
