How many animals I can cater for

I am working on a maths solution. I have 1000 sq meters of space available to me to care for dogs. I will use 2 square meet for each dog. Do I just do 1000/2 = 500 dogs to give me the maximum number of dogs I could care for? Or is the formula something more complex?
