General Chemistry EMPA help? (no specifics)

I'm really struggling with the style of questions in EMPAs. I usually do well in the unit 1 and 2 tests (90% plus) but I cannot for the life of me do well in practice EMPAs, achieving 50-60%, 70% on a good run. The sort of questions I struggle on are: suggest improvements to the method given, why do you not need a more precise measurement, suggest possible risks associated with... All the questions dealing with details on practical methods.
So does anybody have some general tips or advice on answering these sorts of questions?

Look at the mark schemes of past EMPAs because the style of questions is consistent.
