I thought trial and improvement had been removed from the GCSE syllabus?

Pretty sure it hasn't - we're learning it at our school too for the exams.

Exam board's Edexcel, by the way.

It hasn't.
It is there in the old syllabus and as part of numerical methods in the new ones.

x^2 = 6 has a solution between 2 and 3. Find the solution correct to 1 d.p.

Make a table with 3 columns with headings x, x^2= and comment
x=2, x^2=4 Too small
x=3, x^2=9 Too large
Then try half way between
x=2.5, x^2=6.25 Too large
Then try between 2 and 2.5
x=2.3, x^2=5.29 Too small
x=2.4, x^2=5.76 Too small

You have now find the answer lies between 2.4 and 2.5 so try half way between

x=2.45, x^2=6.0025 Too large

Therefore x is closer to 2.4 than to 2.5 so the answer is 2.4.
