Living in london while going hertfordshire university?

Would it be too hard to travel all the way from london to university of hertfordshire? Im not sure if i want to move out but i would hate the travel. I got my drivers license but i share a car with my mum and dad so that option wont always be available. Would it be too expensive to travel? Would it cut into my social life? One thing i want in university is to make ALOT of new friends and have fun but NOT drink and sleep around - which is why im avoiding accomodation. What would you guys do? Lol i need some advice ! Thanks

This may not be what you want to hear, but I would definitely advise moving into halls for the first year.

Hatfield has good rail links to london, but even with a railcard you're still looking at paying £12 a day to the train station, which is then a 30 minute walk to the campus (not fun in the rain!).

I understand the lack of desire to drink lots, but socialising at night is also probably the best way to make friends at Uni. It's what put me, my girlfriend, and all my main friends here together - there's no reason why you can't have a good time whilst staying sober if really necessary.

The halls here are all really nice too, it's probably the best bet I'm afraid, happy to answer any more questions!

Would it be sensible to rent a flat/house for the first year? I understand halls is the most convieniant but im trying to avoid it as much as i can :frown: i hear all these stories and steryotypes of university "changing" people and i'd hate to be one of them :frown:

That's what I'm worried too but let's hope it's a good change!
I have been to an open day to the uni, they said they offer a bus for students from the station to the uni but you have to pay :frown: would think of getting accommodation tbh

Yeah I know a first year who does that too

It's an option, but I'm moving from a house to halls for year 3, housing round here isn't great!

If you speak to the Student Union, there's a chance they could put you in touch with a group who could offer you a room?

Uni only changes you if you want it to, what you've heard is a bunch of horror stories that are far from the truth. Herts has an option to request "quiet" halls so there's nobody to pressure you into doing things

Tbh it depends where in London you are based. Also it is easier to make friends if you are living nearby and don't have to travel far to attend things/worry about how you'll get home in the evenings.
