Can you stop trying to advertise that cesspit, please?

Eh? This isn't a Bath thread (or forum). Bath is a great uni, but it isn't Cambridge (or Imperial)

Hi, is this for chemical engineering too?! I hope so because I'm so glad I'm not alone in having to decide!!!

This is also something that I need to know!! Is the social life at Imperial really as dreadful as everyone makes it out to be? If any current Imperial students could answer this question that would be so so helpful!!

From what I've found out, it does sound like Cambridge has a better social life than Imperial, but it probably varies and must be to do with luck in terms of who you end up with in your accommodation block and on your course etc.

Good luck with your decision!!

Yeah chem eng, it's a nightmare isn't it.
I've been searching for ages on what people think about imperial and its worryingly mixed. Some people hate it, other say it's alright, nobody says they love it and that the social life is great. London has the potential for an expensive but superb social life and I can't think of anything I'd wanna do more than hit London Town but it's whether there'd be any like minded people actually at imperial (ie easy to find not 1 in a million)
If it weren't for my nightmare offer it'd be nice entertaining the idea of going to camb.
But then theres the issue of all the 'super smarts' and all the joy they bring everyone's lives.

Who knows hey

If, by May, I can't decide then I'm just going to Cambridge because they have a college cat.

The grades I need for Cambridge and Imperial are the same while bath is a lot lower.

In what sense "a lot lower"? Typical Bath offer is A*AA, not far behind Cambridge or Imperial's A*A*A.

As a third party observer it seems you'd be far happier in London. it's a no-brainer, go for Imperial. It is a large, vibrant place, and as always, the social life is what you make of it. If you want to hit London's clubs, you'll find plenty (of the 20,000 students I might add) of like-minded folk.

Cambridge and Imperial are in a different league compared to Bath.

Indeed, as shown by the extensive body of evidence you supplied.

Give me a crate of fosters and £100 and ask me which uni and I'd choose imperial just for London. But it's just the students man, Cambridge seems like it'd have a higher population of normal people (feels weird to say) than imperial and a lot more girls too. A uni full of lads may not be my thing idk

URGH WHY I HATE THIS DESCISION

Oh and the average UCAS points at Bath is on a par with Cambridge & Imperial. The student academic profile is not hugely different.

http://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/league-tables/rankings?s=chemical%20engineering

Cambridge - 650 points
Imperial - 616 points
Bath - 505 points

It's not just Chem Engineers that OP will be socialising with at uni. I hope...

And 500+ is not exactly low anyway. It's the 4th highest in the UK!

Imperial's got 8000 women students. It's not exclusively for men. The uni's got 20,000 students, of which many thousands are "normal".

Imperial it is, mate!

@A*da*m you should also join the Cambridge offer holders thread - lots of unbiased advice in there

Are you via NatSci or Engineering?

Thanks for this, I'll take a look!!

And via NatSci

There is a formal hall (usually an old hall), a normal hall (often in a modern dining hall), and a buttery (cafe) - all depending on your college. Which college is your offer?

Oh okay thank you for that I wasn't sure at all about it  And my offer is from Churchill College

It really is a nightmare!! At this rate I'm picking randomly out of a hat and just going to that place!!

Yeah me too and it is just so mixed opinions I think it will just be complete luck with who is in your accommodation block and course!! London has so much potential which is why I'm not overly concerned, because if I could just find one other person who would want to socialise you could just hit the town and socialise with all the other unis!! May I ask what your cambridge and imperial offer is and which college at cambridge?

My offer for Cambridge and Imperial is A*A*A and Bath is AA from Chemistry Physics and Further Maths, I took A Level Maths last year Bath have counted it as an A* but Imperial and Cambridge have sadly completely ignored it :frown:

Hi :h:

I am a second year Mathematical Sciences student at the University of Bath.

You may find this thread useful - I've answered a few questions about Bath there.

The place I'm staying at this year is £360 pounds a month in a fairly good location (about a 10 minute walk to a bus that goes to uni, and doesn't get anywhere near as busy as the main buses, and not too far from a Lidl), and then on top of that there are utilities between the 3 of us, so all in all not too bad.

For my course at least, the workload is okay for people who just want to get by and pass/do averagely, for people that want to do well they can work quite hard and see good results.

Hi, Thank you very much for this!! Much appreciated  I'll take a look at the thread you linked in.

Your accommodation sounds very reasonably priced that's great to hear! Do the buses actually run up and down from the campus as much as they are advertised) I think I've seen every 5-10 minutes and pretty much 24/7 is this true?

Omg you don't know how excited I was to find there was a Lidl in Bath!! I know its note exactly something you should pick your uni on but it was a big positive for me for Bath!!

I think that's the sort of workload I would like, I just don't want to be completely overwhelmed by the high intensities of Cambridge and Imperial when I'm probably going to be right at the bottom of the class compared to all the other super smart people :frown:

Thanks again for your reply!

Cambridge: it's amazing reputation, brand new building so will have amazing facilities, but I'm struggling to see myself doing the whole college and formal dinner thing:/ and also a little concerned at being overwhelmed with the people who go there

What do you mean the formal dinner?

Just the whole traditional old fashioned thing I guess, like it's really not a big thing at all just I don't think it's my thing  I was also concerned at how expensive they were and considering they were three nights a week but another member has explained that they are not compulsory and there will also be the options of doing your own food but then also the normal catering food as well so I'm not too worried about it anymore

So as the title suggests, I've had offers from Bath, Cambridge and Imperial for Chemical Engineering and I am having a very hard time deciding which one to choose:/ for me all three have amazing things about them and also bad things about them and so I'm not really getting anywhere in working out which is going to be best for me, I'll sum up very quickly my thoughts on them,

Bath: Year in industry, high students satisfaction, I love the campus, social life probably best out of the three, lovely city, probably a more mixed group who go there compared to cambridge and Imperial, but it does have a lower reputation nationally and most definitely internationally
Cambridge: it's amazing reputation, brand new building so will have amazing facilities, but I'm struggling to see myself doing the whole college and formal dinner thing:/ and also a little concerned at being overwhelmed with the people who go there
Imperial : in London which is good and bad, expensive, heard awful things about the social life (so if any current students could please clear this up I would be so grateful!! :'), high international student percentage

There's loads more things I've considered but that's just what I could think of in two minutes. The grades I need for Cambridge and Imperial are the same while bath is a lot lower. If anyone could reply with some advice I would be so grateful!! Because I am really struggling I have no clue where to choose:/ I appreciate lots of people will say clearly Cambridge because of the reputation but I am trying to choose on overall uni experience rather than just that. Thank you very much for anyone who takes the time to reply! :'

I can only comment about Imperial but Imperial's reputation for a bad social life is very wrong, it seems many people are giving you false impression of Imperial (presumably as they have gone to Imperial themselves). I'm not trying to convince you to go there but the facts are useful.

Firstly, it is one of the best universities in the world for engineering and while I don't do chemical engineering myself I have friends who do and they love it (and actually chose imperial of oxbridge). In terms of social life I really don't understand where this view that Imperial has no social life comes from cause it's rubbish. Imperial has the most number of societies of any university in the UK so there are loads of ways to socialise through there...there are loads of events occurring all the time, loads of sports clubs and sports nights (if you like sports) and balls/pub crawls/dinners whatever you like. Being in the heart of London there are loads of places to go, clubs to go to...again whatever you like.

Equally...someone said Imperial isn't a campus university well really (unless you are a medic) it is. All the main building are in the south kensington campus and a good majority of the halls are there too. In 2nd and 3rd year you are unlikely to be able to remain in halls and will have to move out further but that's the same for most campus universities anyway so don't be worried by that.

I hope that helps on the Imperial front  if you have any more questions about Imperial feel free to ask
