Also, how decent are student discounts? Do you know how much you save on all of the things above? And where do you shop for food and stuff? Discount shops?Sorry for the massive amount of questions, but I'm currently trying to calculate how much money I'd have per week to spare.
Another question which came in after the live webchat had finished - answered below

Hello - thanks for the questions! It can be very difficult to estimate a weekly budget as individual outgoings vary massively, even for those at the same uni. Bath Uni provide a rough break-down of Living Costs which you can use as a starting guide and amend according to your personal circumstances.

As part of my degree, I lived in London for a year on placement and spent considerably more on travel than I did in Bath. If you're not intending to live within walking distance of campus, the cost of travel is definitely worth calculating in advance.

Don't forget to sign up for the 16-25 Railcard which you can use on all London tubes and buses - it saved me a small fortune! It's also worth checking out your own Uni's webpages as they may provide their own living cost estimates.Student Discounts are really handy and it is worth making use of them.

The NUS Extra and UNiDAYS websites will give you a good idea about how much you get off and where. I have tended to just shop at my closest supermarket but I do cut costs by buying in bulk and shopping at fruit & veg markets when possible.

Wishing you all the best!

Hi Shadowsfear

Students eligible for NHS funding will still have their tuition fees paid for by their NHS authority. Note that some NHS courses are not covered by NHS funding so you need to check with your college/university.

If you’re eligible to apply for an income assessed NHS bursary, then you’ll be able to apply for a reduced-rate Maintenance Loan to help cover living costs - how much finance available depends on your circumstances.

To find out more about the funding available to students on NHS-funded courses, visit: The NHSBusiness Services Authority www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/students

If you have any further questions you can submitthem to NHS experts who’ll be hosting a live web chat on Thursday - http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=3868155

Thanks

Hi SFE,

Is the maintenance loan an annual payment, and is it given in installments?

Thanks

Posted from TSR Mobile

Hi Vuvuzela

The Maintenance Loan is paid straight into your bank account, usually in three instalments, one at the start of each term. Bear in mind that the Maintenance Loan is awarded to cover your living costs for one academic year and you’ll need to apply for it for each year of your course.

Hope that helps.

Hi, sorry if this has already been asked, but when is the best time to apply for student finance and when is the deadline? Thanks.

Hi TheUniLad

You should apply as soon as possible when the application service opens in early March - www.gov.uk/student-finance - The deadline to apply for student finance is 27 May 2016

If you miss the deadline we’ll still process your application and try to get you some support in place for starting your course. But remember that if you do apply after the deadline date you might not receive all your student funding at the start of term... so apply as soon as you can!

Hi there,

I'm in a really awkward situation based on when SFE will be providing me with the final 3rd of my loan and when my rent is due - this is made worse by the fact that 1st year student bank accounts allegedly have overdraft limits which are significantly lower than advertised. I have to pay my final two rent installments at the beginning of the next two months, but my loan isn't due until approximately the 8th of April I believe. I budgeted with my loan in mind, and my loan covers the rent payments combined with what I'd earned from working last year, but the loan is just coming through too late for me to make the payments by the date and I'm very scared. My parents aren't financially strong enough to pay for both months' rent either... What can I do about this?

Hi aidaan,

I think the best idea would be to speak to your uni’s student advice and support team - they will be able to support you with budgeting advice and provide you with information about where you may be able to apply for additional/ emergency funding. You should also consider speaking to your landlord and explaining the situation/ see what can be done to accommodate you until your student finance is available.Check out our live webchat on budgeting which took place earlier this week http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=3868109

Hello I am looking to start a Dance/Performing Arts Course at Uni for 3 years on a BA (Hons) Degree, fees are £9K per annum can I apply for a student loan to cover my course fees, I am 17 and will be 18 when I start? Can I apply for help for accommodation and living expenses on a means tested basis on top of the course fees? I need to know if I can afford to accept a place I am auditioning for, thank you. I am reading about all sorts of help but don't know how to apply for all these options? Also does it depend on the college applying for - I am looking at London Studio Centre and BIRD in London. Thank you.

Hi studentemilie,

You’ll be able to apply for a Tuition Fee Loan to cover tuition fee costs charged by your uni or college, and a Maintenance Loan to help pay for living costs, for things like rent, food, books, travel and other expenses, while you’re studying. There are other criteria to meet to be eligible for student finance - your college/university has to be designated to attract student finance funding. How much you’ll be able to get will depend on where you’re living and where you’restudying. Your household income may also affect what you can get.

In the meantime, you can use our www.gov.uk/student-finance-calculator to get a rough estimate of what you’ll be able to get.

Hi,
I've applied for uk unis but also edinburgh in which i was granted eu (non uk) fee status, i haven't had a reply yet but should i still apply for uk finance or as an eu student or through the scottish system? I'm a bit confused and worried as i read scottish applications have to be in by march 31st and unis have till may to answer us!
Many thanks
Josie

Hi Josie

You’ll need to speak to SAAS with regards to how their funding works and when their deadlines are. I would advise you check our online guidance about what support you may be entitled to as an SFE or EU student and then apply when the service opens in early March. You’ll be able to access our main guides, factsheets and YouTube videos here - http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/content.php?r=20275-New-students-Resources

Hi
I am waiting on a decision from the university I applied to. Should I still apply for student finance?

Hi Chesky_7

Yes. You should apply as soon as possible when the service opens in early March. Apply online at www.gov.uk/student-finance

It’s easy to update your application online later if you change your university or college. If we need further information from you or your parents we can stillprogress with this and you will have peace of mind your funding is in place.

If you haven't got a place at university but hope to go through clearing an still start this year , when and how should you apply for student finance?

Hi ExcuseMe!

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have a confirmed place at Uni. You should apply as soon as possible when the application service opens in early March.

The best way to apply is online at www.gov.uk/student-finance

It’s really simple to update your application online later if you change your university or college. If we need further information from you or your parents we can still progress with this and you will have peace of mind your funding is in place.

Hi

My parents are divorced and my mum is my primary guardian earning around £28,500 per year. I have a really complicated living situation. My dad, after the divorce, couldn't afford to move out so my mum has allowed him to stay. We live in a house which is 2 flats converted to a house but by the time I'm at uni it will have been made into 2 flats again. My mum is also experiencing financial difficulty at the moment (she has more debts than her income can pay for)
Will any of this impact on student finance?
Also I suffer with depression and anxiety and despite having help from different agencies it still can impact on my life quite heavily. Will I be able to get a DSA and what evidence would I need to supply?
(Sorry for all the questions!) Also I know most uni's provide bursaries and scholarships but would I need to speak to each uni individually about my circumstances and whether I am eligible for any?

Thanks

Hi JesArm96

What you’re able to get would be based around your circumstances so, we’d take into account things like where you live, your household income etc We’d also ask for evidence to prove your circumstances i.e that your parents are divorced. I’d advise you to try out our Student Finance Calculator - www.gov.uk/student-finance-calculator - to see what you could get –simply answer the multiple choice question

Sorry to hear about your condition. In this case you would be able to apply for extra help through Disabled Students Allowances. When applying you’d need to again supply evidence such as a letter from your doctor or specialist.

Lastly, each uni or college will provide different bursaries and scholarships so you’d need to speak to them individually to see what they offer.

Hope this helps.

Is there a regulation stipulating the minimum hours of face to face live lectures/sessions a BA degree course must include in order for the university to be allowed to receive fees via student loans? If so, how many hours must they provide, and where can I find that as official information?

Hi Npton

I’m unaware of any such ‘regulation’ a BA course must adhere to in terms to 'face to face live' interaction with students. With regards to full-time and part-time courses these obviously differ in intensity and therefore differ in what the uni or college charges the student.

Hi Nyashah

Unfortunately,we would not be able to provide funding for your studies. Although,as an international student, you may be able to get funding elsewhere I would recommend you check and get in touch with http://ukcisa.org.uk they’ll be able to assess your circumstances and advise you further on what you could get. Hope this helps.

Hi, I'm an independent student applying for a 2016-17 PGCE course. I currently live with my boyfriend - do you take his income into account when assessing my application?

Hihleeper,

Please accept my apologies for the delay in getting back to you!

Yes If you’re applying for funding that requires you to be means tested, then we will take your complete household income into account when making an assessment.

Hi adarkin, your household income does include your parent’scohabiting partner but we’ll only ask for their details if you’re applying fora higher amount of Maintenance Loan. If you’re only applying for the Tuition Fee Loanand the basic Maintenance Loan (the bits that don’t depend on your householdincome) you can fill in your application without your parent and their partnergiving any details.
If you are applying for the higher amount of Maintenance Loan we'll ask your parent and their partner to give us their financial details so we can check their income with HMRC. They can provide these online.
You can find out more about what evidence we need toprocess your application by downloading our detailed main guide ‘Student finance– new full-time students 2016/17’ from our student finance zone.

Thank you for replying!

Is there a website that would tell me how much I am able to get? I have looked on the GOV website but it asks for the total household income and I'd like to know how much I can get before being assessed.

Hello,

So I have applied for the 2016-17 foundation course in Wales . I have some questions regarding financial help and would also appreciate some information more about it.

A little background about myself, I am due to be an eu national in the coming months(before UNI starts), lived in the EU for six years. When I applied through ucas I selected private finance, because we were a bit skeptical about student loan and because of my current situation.

My question is, if we pay for the first year of my course will there be any financial help available for this year?, and is it possible to apply for student loan for the following years?

How do I apply for a student loan?

Could you please provide some vital information to eu students that are planning to study in the uk about student loans and other financial help?

Many thanks.

Hello

Is there any danger of my Fee status changing in the middle of my degree due to any political changes in the UK? I'm a EU student coming to study in Cambridge. By political action I mean either

a) a decision to raise the maximum tuition fee universities are allowed to pay as has been done in the past

b) any kind of amendment to EU - UK relationships which might affect the legal status of EU students in UK

Or, is it so that when I sign up at the beginning of my degree the same tuition fee applies for the whole degree?

Hi,

I'm a UK student hoping to study medicine starting in September 2016. Are tuition fees funded by the NHS for any year of the course?

Thanks

I have looked and there is nothing that tells me how much i personally am able to get. I need to know how much I can get that isn't income based.

The GOV website with the student finance calculator is income based and also doesn't mention anything about the first part of the maintenance loan not being assessed and the higher part being assessed.
