Several Questions!

Hi everyone!
I'm sure you're all tired of getting bombarded with posts like these, but I'm interested in transferring schools in the Fall of 2008. I was just wondering which UK schools have top English departments so I could figure out exactly where I want to go. I'd like to be either a journalist or an English professor. I figured the obvious universities like Oxford and Cambridge, but what about UCL? St Andrews?

So, to my horror as I was searching Oxford's website, I found out that they don't accept transfer students. I immediately went searching around to other universities that I was looking at and I couldn't find anything like: "_______ does not accept transfer students, so you will be required start your course here from the beginning even if you have already studied for one or two years at another institution."

How common is this?
Thanks again for all your help.
Any information you could give me would be fantastic.
Most universities don't accept transfer students. It's not like America here. At best, you might be able to start in the 2nd year of a degree at some universities.

And here are the latest English rankings to give you a general idea of quality (take all rankings with a grain of salt...).

Durham
KCL
Warwick
Bristol
