2008 Applicants

Hi,

Well i'm just wondering if there is anyone on here that's going to uni in 2008?

At the moment i am only going to open days and i'm viewing Exeter on 15th sep 07.

I'm looking at the Drama courses which include the tenchnical aspects of theatre too (mainly Set Design).

I'm looking at Exeter to be my number one choice followed by Reading. Other universities I'm interested in are: Aberystwth, Salford, Winchester and either Solent southampton or Cumbria.

Thanx,
Pretty Halo Girl

Wow, you've got a range of unis there...

Is that King Alfred's, Winchester, or another one? Think one of the girls from my school went to KA,W for drama too.

Good on you for starting early too - far better than starting too late and possibly making the wrong choice

Well My course leader at college organised trips to various local universities, to give us a taste of what they offer, and what the universites are like, we did that in may/june this year.

Now she's given us a summer task to start looking at universites. To get a list together then to write a draft personal statement and dummy UCAS form, for when we go back to college in sep.

And I don't think so, the prospectus i've got just says The University of Winchester.

king alfreds college is now called uni of winchester. for one year in between it was called something like university college winchester. my g/f graduated from there when it was king alfs (she's a little older than me!). it has a great specialism in education studies/teacher training (well, like st lukes, its been doing it for 200 years). it also has a growing music portfolio, and english/psychology courses up to phd. the degrees used to be validated by southampton uni, until it became a university 3 (?) years ago.

edit: i have a hunch that the phds are still validated by southampton, but i could be thinking of somewhere else...

^^ ah, that explains it
I think I'm going to apply in 2008, for English. Or possibly English and classical studies, but I'm not too sure about that. Don't want to strain my poor personal statement too much :frown:

Quite to the contrary, you can really go to town on an English and Classics PS as the two link together so well.
Yes, but I'm applying to other places for English and Philosophy (and very possibly English with Film) which might strain it a bit. English, then philosophy, then film, then classics... might look a bit sus.

You may have to narrow down your choices a bit.
I applied for Classics and English at two places, and English and Philosophy at the other four. This worked out fine as many of the ancient philosophers, such as Plato and Socrates, are covered in most Classics courses.
However, I agree with you that film would be stretching it, as unless you're particularly interested in films that are on classical topics (e.g. Gladiator; Jean Cocteau's Orphée) you may struggle to connect all three courses and you're far less likely to impress the Film admissions tutors than you are to impress the Classics/Philosophy staff. And you've got to fit English into all this too? Phew! Has anyone at your school/college sanctioned your decision to apply for this combination of courses?

No one knows... lol.
I haven't decided yet, it's just that I don't really want to apply to single honours, yet King's has a pretty small range of options for english joints. I thought I could just throw film in at the end as a 'hobby'... still thinking on it though...

If you just throw in the film at the end as a hobby then the film admissions tutors may well think you're not committed enough to it.

I haven't applied for any film courses, so I don't know, but I'm guessing that to impress a film admissions tutor you'd have to do more than just watch DVDs in your room and go to the cinema once in a while. I'm guessing they'd be looking for applicants that do more than this, like attend local film festivals and/or subscribe to film magazines such as Total Film or Vertigo, as well as being clued up on significant directors from around the world, such as François Truffaut.

Personally I think you'd be hard pushed to convey your enthusiasm for film and classics and English and philosophy and somehow shove in stuff about extra-curriculars and your personal strengths.
I am enthusiastic about film - and I know a lot about world cinema, etc. But, having said that, the course is only 25% film, so I don't think they'd want as much about that anyway. I know many people who have applied for joint honours and only talked about one of their subjects for about 1/6th of their statement. (And film festivals? Where I come from? Oh no.)

Classics and phil. could be merged together, a majoroty on english, and then throw in some film as an 'extra' at the end.

... As you can see, this is still in it's development...

Well, I suppose you can try, and hats off to you if it works.

Would still recommend getting a teacher or someone to look over your application before it goes off though
I probably will. I haven't started my PS yet though, so there's nothing for anyone to see yet.
might apply in '08 for Arabic/Middle Eastern Studies. Not entirely decided yet, need AS Results first

Not sure if I'm in the wrong thread for this buttt...

Am thinking of applying to the Law with German degree (Magister) and I read that they interview you to make sure you're good enough in the language.

My question, do you have to be like fluent, how much do they expect you to know? I only do it at A-Level and am nowhere near fluent! :s-smilie: *is scared*
Reply 18
well i suppose that because you are doing it as an a-level and so long as you get a good grade in it, you'll be fine. I think that it just means you have to be doing it as an a-level or be fluent but it's not a neccesity for you to be fluent in it. If that makes any sense lol
