The Avian Influenza

The WHO would like to address all nations on the outbreak of the Avian influenza.

An introduction to the disease and its causes and effects can be found on the following site:
http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/avian_influenza/en/

The WHO would like to highlight the following statments:

'Consumers need to be sure that all parts of the poultry are fully cooked (no “pink” parts) and that eggs, too, are properly cooked (no “runny” yolks).

Consumers should also be aware of the risk of cross-contamination. Juices from raw poultry and poultry products should never be allowed, during food preparation, to touch or mix with items eaten raw. When handling raw poultry or raw poultry products, persons involved in food preparation should wash their hands thoroughly and clean and disinfect surfaces in contact with the poultry products. Soap and hot water are sufficient for this purpose.'

'There is concern that the virus – if given enough opportunities – will change into a form that is highly infectious for humans and spreads easily from person to person, but this has yet to occur.'

The WHO are currently actively investigating a recent report in Turkey concerning the transmission of this disease from human - human. However, there has yet to be any confirmed evidence of this.

The WHO have provided all necessary precautions to the countries and hope that the nations will take this into account for the health and well-being of their country.

Further, as well as attempting to mass produce the H5N1 vaccine the WHO are taking measures in case of an epidemic.

rapid containment plans to stop a pandemic using public health measures (isolation, quarantine of contacts, personal hygiene and social distancing) and anti-virals

People's Democratic Republic of Korea has suffered from Avian Flu, and would like to thank both the WHO and FAO, for their help in tackling the disease. North Korea would, however, like to request further aid and assistance in tackling this ever dangerous disease.

As an active member of the WHO the Principality of Monaco is already aware of this information, however, the Monegasque representative would thank the WHO representative for reiterating this important information and for bringing it to the attention of those nations that were not aware of it.

The WHO has been working with the FAO to combat this disease.
Despite the successful eradication of the disease on the 25th April 2005, the WHO regretably have to inform North Korea (due to a recent outbreak) that there was no hope of completely eradicating the disease, their only hope is containment and prevention of future spread of the disease, which the WHO will glady provide assistance in.

Avian influenza situation in Viet Nam
29 June 2007

The Ministry of Health in Viet Nam has confirmed two new human cases of influenza A(H5N1) virus infection, the first human cases to have been reported from Viet Nam since November 2005. Both cases have been confirmed by the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE) and by the WHO H5 Reference Laboratory, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The first case is a 29 year old male from Vinh Phuc Province. He developed symptoms on 10 May some days after slaughtering poultry for a wedding. He was admitted to hospital on 15 May and was discharged on 11 June.

The second human is a 19 year old male from Thai Nguyen Province. He developed symptoms on 20 May following exposure to poultry at a slaughter house. He was admitted to hospital on 25 May and remains in hospital in a stable condition.

To date, there has been no evidence of an epidemiological link between the human cases, and no evidence of infection in close contacts of the cases.

These human cases have coincided with a large number of new poultry outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza reported in Viet Nam during May and June this year.'

Syria thanks the WHO for their continued and diligent updates on the Avian Influenza issue. We hope that it continues to stay away from our borders and are in the process of taking neccessary measures to prevent its infiltration of Syria. With any luck, it will stay away, unless spread by an American agent working undercover to sabotage the Syrian economy and population,
