Hello,

For starters those are quiet tricky numbers that don't go into each other that well, so I don't know if they'll be that tricky but it's best to be prepared.

First of all you know that in 60mins you travel 45miles.
Therefore it takes 3hrs to travel 135 with 27miles left.
So now we want to know how long it takes to travel 27miles.
Easiest way to do this I find is to find a number that goes into both 45 and 27. (9)
You can work out (45/9=5) that you travel 9miles in 5minutes.
To find out how long it takes to travel 27miles....27/9=3 and then 3x5minutes= 15 minutes
So the answer is 2hrs 15minutes.

I'm studying these questions for an aptitude test coming up and I've found that if you can learn patterns of what numbers go into an hour it really helps!! I.e. 2,30's. 3,20's. 4,15's. 5,12's.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the answer isn't 2hrs 15mins, the answer is 3 hrs 36 mins
45*3 = 135 = 3 hours
162-135=27 miles remaining
At 45 mph we travel 45 miles in 60 mins (45/60)
So we travel 4.5 miles in 6 mins (4.5/6)
So we travel 9 miles in 12 mins (9/12)
Remember to multiply by the top and divide by the bottom
27/9 = 3
3*12 = 36 mins
Answer 3 hrs and 36 mins
Can someone please break down how to calculate time = 72miles / 135 mph. I know the answer is 32 mins but I haven't a clue how to get to it ...
Now I've racked my brain please could some one explain and break down of how to calculate how long it would take to travel 72 miles at 135 mph. I know the answer is 32 mins but I haven't a clue how to get to it.
Divide 135 by 60 to give you your miles per minute, which equals 2.25, then divide 72 by your miles per minute figure 72/2.25 equals 32.

Hey sorry to bump the thread again, just had one that I was stuck on

What speed covers 210 miles in 3 hours and 45 mins?

Also what is your method when you get division such as 210 / 15 and need to work it out very quickly in your head?
Sorry also at 192MPH how long does it take to travel 176Miles

speed = distance / time
time = distance / speed

time = 176/192 = 11/12 hours
11/12 hours * 60 minutes = 55 minutes :smile:

Would you break that down a touch more, how are you getting 11/12 from 176/192?

It's a simplified fraction :smile: (I used my calculator but...: )
So you want to look for ways to cancel the large fraction of 176/192 down, using smaller numbers. The longer way would be to see how long you can half the fraction if even numbers are used. So 176/2 is 88 and 192/2 is 96 meaning you have 88/96. 88/2 is 44, 96/2 is 48 meaning you have 44/48 etc. But you can see that this would take ages.
The quicker way would be to find a common factor to both the top and bottom numbers.
You can see that 4 goes into both 44 and 48 and so you can divide both numbers by 4 instead :smile:
44/4 is 11 and 48/4 is 12 meaning you are left with 11/12 :h:
After this, there are no factors common to both 11 and 12 apart from 1 so you can't cancel any further.

Thanks for the response, the problem is i feel that that question would take me a min or two to answer, and from what I gather from this thread you dont have that sort of time
Hey, could someone please give me some tips on working out Fuel Consumption questions, I feel fairly confident with SDT questions by converting the Speed/Distance to a fraction then dividing and multiplying from there.

Can someone give me a bit of advice on how I can use this to answer some of the following questions;

You travel an average speed of 280KTS, how much fuel do you need for a 70 mile trip, if you burn 140KGS per hour?

You are burning 4kgs of fuel per minute. How much fuel will you need for a 220 mile trip if you average 150MPH?

You have used 396 kgs of fuel in the past 3 hours and 40 mins. How much do you burn per hour?

You travel 88 NM. How much fuel will you need if you burn 15 kgs per hour, and are travelling at 132 kts?

Greatly appreciated :smile:
Can anyone link me to the answers please?

These kind of questions can be quite intimidating, but you just need to break them down into what they are asking.

First question essentially wants to know the amount of fuel you need. Giving the only fuel measurement you are giving is your burn rate which is a measurement of time, it looks like you need to calculate time :smile:

So, to start of its just a standard D/S/T question, using the speed and distance mentioned:
(You said you knew how to do this, so wont bother showing working)
Time = D/S...
Time = 15 minutes

Fuel measurement is in hours, and your time is in minutes, so you can put that into a fraction to find out how much fuel you need:
15 mins = 1/4 hour
So, 1/4 of 140 = 35Kg/hr

Need anymore help, feel free to give me a shout.
The simple equation is D/T(60)=SPEED
Or distance in miles divided by time in minutes multiplied by 60 equals speed in MPH.
D/S(60)=Time
or distance divided by speed times equals time in minutes !
ST /60= Distance in miles
The simple equation is D/T(60)=SPEED

There’s been quite a bit of talk recently on the numerical reasoning tests at OASC, along with people asking how to do the sums quickly in your head so here we go.

Top Tips!

Know your times tables as best you can.

Learn the following time/speed patterns

There are 2 periods of 30 minutes in an hour

There are 3 periods of 20 minutes in an hour

There are 4 periods of 15 minutes in an hour

There are 5 periods of 12 minutes in an hour

There are 6 periods of 10 minutes in an hour

There are 10 periods of 6 minutes in an hour

There are 12 periods of 5 minutes in an hour

There are 15 periods of 4 minutes in an hour

There are 20 periods of 3 minutes in an hour

There are 30 periods of 2 minutes in an hour

At 60mph, you travel one mile, every minute.

Working out SPEED

What speed covers 15 miles in 2 hours and 30 mins?

Ok so... Speed = distance/time

Firstly, you must change the time into minutes. If it is already in minutes, leave it!

So 2 hours 30 minutes = 150 minutes

Ok so... Speed = distance/time

Speed = 15/150

Now, you need to cancel down your fraction, until the denominator (the bottom half of the fraction) can be multiplied easily into 60 (minutes). All will become clear...

Speed = 15/150

Speed = 1/10

Now is the easy bit (if you can remember the figures in red above). You need to times the denominator, until it fits perfectly into 60. In this example, clearly it is 6 as 10 fits in 60, 6 times. You now need to do the same with the numerator (the top fraction) to give you the final answer.

Speed = 1/10

Speed = 1 x 6 (because 10 goes into 60, 6 times).

Speed = 6mph.

Ok so that was long winded, but hopefully it was reasonably clear? I’ll do another example now which is slightly different, and then some more without notes.

What speed covers 17 miles in 20 mins?

In this example, we don’t need to convert hours into minutes, because it is already done for us.

So...a little faster this time...

Speed = distance/time

Speed = 17/20 (how many times does 20 go into 60 minutes?)

Speed = 17 x 3 (3 x 20 =60 minutes)

Speed = 51mph

Working out TIME

The method above can be used to work out time also.

At 20 mph, how long does it take to travel 68 miles?

Time = distance/speed

Time = 68/20

Similar to the SPEED method, the denominator must go into 60 (minutes). In this case, 20 goes into 60, three times.

Time = 68/20 (how many times does 20 go into 60 minutes?)

Time = 68 x 3 (3 x 20 = 60 minutes)

Time = 204 minutes

What’s important to remember, is that 204 is NOT the answer. You must now convert this into hours and minutes.

1 hour = 60 minutes

2 hours = 120 minutes

3 hours = 180 minutes

4 hours = 240 minutes

Therefore 204 minutes = 3 hours, 24 minutes.

Working out DISTANCE

To be totally honest, my method isn’t that good for this. But this is what I would do:

At 120 mph, how far do you travel in 1 hour and 15 mins?

Distance = speed x time

Distance = 120 x 1 hour and 15 minutes (convert into minutes)
Distance = 120 x 75 = 9000 (as you can see this is where it turns into a nightmare)

If you divide this number by 60 (minutes in an hour) then you should get the right answer.

Distance = 120 x 75

Distance = 9000 divided by 60 (minutes in an hour)

Distance = 150 miles

150 is the correct answer, but I’ve have had to write that down and it would have taken quite some time. That was a particularly nasty example it’s not normally that bad. Some you can do easily in your head without doing any of this. For example...

At 27 mph, how far do you travel in 1 hour and 20 mins?

Well think about it. At 27 mph how far do you travel in ONE hour? 27 miles obviously.

At 27 mph, how far do you travel in 20 minutes. You can do this in your head.

What’s a third (3 times 20 = 1 hours) of 27? 9 obviously.

So now...
27 + 9 = 36 miles

Hopefully this has helped some of you with your methods. Try these questions below.

20 into 68 miles goes 3 (hours) times. You have 8 left over

20mph goes 60(minutes) 3 times

8x3 = 24 minutes

3 hours and (8x3) 24 minutes

Another example:

50miles
15mph

15 into 50 miles goes 3(hours) times = 45 with 5 left over

15mph into 60(minutes) goes 4 times

4x5= 20 minutes

3 hours and 20 minutes

One more:

28 miles
20 mph

20 mph into 28 miles goes 1(hours) times with 8 left over

20 mph into 60(minutes) goes 3 times

8x3 = 24 minutes

Times = 1 hours 24 minutes

Hope that helps somebody!

QM your Time example massively helped and from that I think I have just found the most fastest way to to work it out.

68 miles
20mph
Time?

20 into 68 miles goes 3 (hours) times. You have 8 left over

20mph goes 60(minutes) 3 times

8x4 = 24 minutes

3 hours and (8x3) 24 minutes

I there an error on the above quote?

should it be 8x3?
