It differs by exam board. I do OCR A level English Lit and both exams are closed book, but you are allowed copies of the texts when you write your “non-exam assessment”, which is the coursework component.
I believe AQA allow you to bring copies of the texts for some exams and some sections of exams, but some sections/exams are closed book also.

For Edexcel the school is required to provide you with clean copies of the texts but you cannot bring your own.
