Rent Question

Hellos.

I'm trying to get an idea about how much it'll cost me living and studying in London, so I'd appreciate any help.

Could anyone please give me some details about accomodation fees in residences provided by King's? Here's what I'm not clear about:

- can you sign up (for the place) for the whole academic year or just a term at a time and renew each term?
- do you have to pay weekly or at the beginning of each term? (or for the whole year at once?)
- if I'm going on holiday in December for example (12Dec-12Jan), do I have to pay for that month too? Even if I won't be using the room during that period?

Oh and can anyone tell me what's the weekly cost for food in "catered residences"? Any further details about food costs/prices would really help me.

I know there are lots of info on the net, but I figured I'd get the best answers by going directly to the source, right?

Thank you!!

You have an offer from Kings...did they not send you a 'mydigs' and 'mymoney' booklet?

The answers to the questions you ask vary greatly depending on which accomodation you get allocated!! Much easier to use the tables that KCL provide...

- if I'm going on holiday in December for example (12Dec-12Jan), do I have to pay for that month too? Even if I won't be using the room during that period? Yes, you do have to pay. Because you are leaving your stuff there and so they can't rent it out

thanks abbey, you nailed it for me.

and k89j, I haven't received the booklets yet, I only got the offer on ucas. It takes about 2 weeks for a letter to travel from england to bucharest, at least that's my experience!

I assume if you're only there for a term then you only pay by term.
But you'll probably be there the entire year.

EDIT: Sorry, what am I on? I haven't had enough sleep recently!
You pay by term. The third term is by far the cheapest of the lot.
But they assume you're there for the year, I guess. You definitely pay by term: usually just after your student loan's come through.

You sign up for the whole academic year, and pay at the beginning of each term (however in intercollegiates there is also the option of paying by direct debit each month I think). You pay for the length of your contract, regardless of whether you use your room. In intercollegiates you can claim back 2 quid a day or something for meals during Christmas/Easter holidays (and to get this you have to give your keys in so can't get into your room), but not e.g. for weekeneds even if you go home for them all. I'm in a catered intercollegiate and it's about 5 grand a year. I'm not sure how much of that is food, but the food is nasty anyway!

Miss Monkey, 5 grand (punds i suppose) a year? You mean academic year (sept-jun) of course. Would that be an "average" figure, or a min?

It's £4,700 where I am and I'm on the more expensive end.

holy cow! def. not going for intercollegiates. do the other king's accomm. have a good social aspect? does it matter since you can socialise at union and other places?

what's your verdict about halls vs apartments?

Yes Intercollegiates do seem to be more expensive than the King's halls. I think they've all got the social aspect if you want it (and go looking for it), but equally if that's not your thing you can stay away from it. If I could pick my Halls again, I'd have based it on the distance from uni, but only because I'm lazy!!

lol ok ok. i think i'm going with
#1 SSA
#2 GDSA
#3 Wolfson
#4 Brian Creamer

but also checking out renting privately. i'm guessing it's probably more expensive?

You can actually get it only a little bit more expensive but obviously not in the location of SSA...you have to go quite a bit further out unless you want to die in elephant and castle :frown:

But as a first year? I would never advise going private. Not only does it immediately separate you from people, it also means that you'd have to go home by yourself etc late at night which probably isn't particularly fun. You also of course miss out on the whole experience of living as a student with a whole load of other students!

My advice? Leave the private accom until you have to in the 2nd year and beyond...

Elephant and Castle rocks.

Halls do work out much cheaper because bills are included and more importantly, the contracts tend to be about 2-3 months shorter.
