Accommodation and uni life for mature student

Hi! I am hoping to apply (late I know) to Sussex Uni starting later this year. I will be 24 when starting my first year, and am full of regret that I didn't go to uni earlier in my life (various reasons). I am keen to have some of the university life, such as partying and drinking etc (though definitely less than the average fresher as my hangovers are a bit worse these days LOL) but worry that people will think it's weird if I am a bit older?

Do you know how many mature students in their 20s go to Sussex, and whether they are separated from the other students? or do people not care so much about age? I am fairly keen to live in student accommodation but not if I would be the only 20 something, with everyone else 18 or 19. I think people would find it a bit weird? I personally could get along with people of different ages as long as theyre a nice person!

Also, is there still good opportunity to go out, go to parties, and have a lively social life etc even if I didn't live in one of the party central accommodations? (whatever ones they are) and what accommodation do you think would best suit me? I want somewhere fairly social but not partying every night, with preferably a range of ages from 18 - mid to late 20s? And hopefully people who also want to socialise, go out etc. I don't want to be specifically with mature students as I feel that would mean people who want to study all the time and not really go to parties or socialise (probs how i should be i suppose haha)

SORRY I have asked so many specific questions !! Thank you! I just don't want to go to a university and feel completely isolated from everyone else because of my age or accommodation choice.

24 is not that old at all! Speaking as a mature student myself at Sussex , I don't think you'll be treated any differently at all. Sussex is not the most social uni however, so if social life is very important you may want to look elsewhere too.

Thanks for the reply!

Tbh I don't need to have a crazy social life, I just want to go out often enough to not feel like I'm missing out on things. I have serious FOMO at times (which I will obviously need to work on getting past, I do plan to take my degree very seriously)! :')

What accommodation are you staying in?

You're welcome  What's FOMO? I'm living off campus in Brighton at the moment

Fear Of Missing Out hahaha  Oh okay, is that with other mature students? One of the appealing things for me about Sussex Uni is being so close to Brighton.

Hi Harry,

I'm starting Brighton uni this sept as a "mature" student (27) and am looking for a quieter accommodation within an easy commute to the Falmer campus. Can you recommend anywhere?

Thanks

Hi @GenGen90

If you are looking for quieter accommodation, you might want to consider our Unihomes and Unilets properties (scroll to the bottom!). They are shared houses off campus that are managed by the university. They will be an option on your accommodation application. You can also use the notes section of the application to let us know any preferences you have that are not specifically asked about during the process, e.g. wanting to be placed with students close to your age etc.

You can always look for accommodation in the private sector too. If you want to start that process, you can join our facebook group where students meet up or advertise spare rooms in their properties.

The Falmer campus is well served by public transport. There is a train station on campus and you can buy a unizone train ticket cheaply with your student rail card. If you were thinking of renting privately, this really opens up the areas you might consider renting in. The 25 bus route runs 24 hours to the Falmer campus and goes all the way through town to Hove.

Let me know if I can help any further

Have a look at Private Purpose Built Student Accommodation too. Pavilion Point and Abacus House are near to the city centre for shops, bars and the seafront, and have a mix of all years and Universities and Colleges within. Scape, Hollingbury house, Student Castle are further up the Lewes Road, so near to the Sussex Uni but away from the fun.
Many have social spaces and some even have a Residents Gym! Hope that helps.

I’ve firmed Sussex, and I’ll be 21 in my first year! Although not my first rodeo, I went to university for a year before and met many people who were 20+ during that time. I’m thinking of staying on campus for the social aspect, and I honestly think most people aren’t bothered about your age, as long as you get on with them. I still visit my friends I made when attending my previous university, and one of my mates is 26 while the rest of us are 20-21 so O really wouldn’t worry!

Hey! I’ll also be 21 in my first year in Sussex in September. I was pretty worried about feeling ‘old’, so I really appreciate this!

I have!! I’m going to stick with Norwich house. I’m not worried about all the fancy extras! I just want a place to sleep and wash! Then I can use the money i’m saving on accommodation elsewhere
