Mature Students

Hi guys I’m 36 and about to embark on a scary yet exciting career change and go back to school.
I don’t think I have enough ucas points for uni so will have to take an access course first. I’m thinking of videoing my whole experience from day one.
I found it hard to get a feel for and advice on my lifestyle change so I hope I can show people exactly what it is like to become a mature student while having a family.
Do you think people would find this interesting? Or am I wasting what will be my precious time?
Thanks
This might be worth doing, I felt the same at this stage, relatively uninformed.

I think it would make for quite an interesting YouTube channel, though it could be quite time consuming with all the editing and whatnot.

If you have any questions by the way, I'd be happy to answer! I'm a mature student that's just finished first year at university, I did an Access Course last year.
It may help people, but I can't say my first port of call was looking for similar experiences on Youtube when I decided to go back to college.

It was mostly just figuring out whether I could afford to do it while dropping to 11 hours at work, then weighing up the pros and cons.

Hi thanks for the positive comments, just worried about the financial difference between the funding for uni and there seems to be nothing for an Access course? Or am I looking in the wrong places?
Also even after visiting the college about the access course I still know very little and just think it would help people in the future to see a true life account of it.
I have contacted the college and uni to see if they would be interested in helping me.. but who knows what response I will get.

You can get the whole course fees itself funded through an 'Advanced learner loan', you won't have to pay anything if you don't already have a level 3 qualification and if you go to university afterwards.
If you Google it, it should come up with a government website. Uni funding is a lot different in that you get course and maintenance funding based on your household income.

You don't get any kind of maintenance loan though because it's only a part time course. If it's any consolation to you though, I managed to work 30 hours a week and still get 36/45 distinctions (So it's entirely possible to work and do well)

What subject is your course specialising in? I did Humanities and Social Science. So it was a mix of Sociology, psychology and English Lit. We were assessed in a number of ways: coursework, exams and presentations, along with a 'mini dissertation' at the end. They expect you to reference throughout (so that it prepares you for uni referencing) so your course I can imagine will be relatively the same in that sense, a mix of exams.

Hope this helps!

The access course is based on Education, hopefully going to become a teacher. Thanks for the help and info I have a plan to work as well I was just wondering if I was missing something.
Hi there @mallyk1

I think a blog or vlog of your experience would be a great idea, even if it's just for you to look back on or to publish for others to see.

As has been said, there is the Advanced Learner Loan for the Access to HE courses if taken full time, I took one for mine and again, as has been said, if you complete an undergraduate degree the loan is wiped out.

Are you looking at doing a straight Primary Education with QTS degree or thinking of taking a PGCE?

Fi :horse:
Hiya Mallyk1, I did an access course when I was 50 in Glasgow followed by a degree in the University of Strathclyde. It was a scary experience at first but when you start to identify the different support services, the mature students association and your fellow students things do start to get easier. I would recommend making the video as there will always be someone in the same boat as yourself who is looking for advice and guidance. There are many cohorts of mature students within the overall cohort and each group face their own challenges and barriers. Many students will have to balance their academic workload against any commitments or responsibilities they may have outside university such as family, caring, work, estrangement etc. To record both your own and fellow students experience would be superb. Gerry.
