First Class is a private news/email program that the OU supply and run
servers for. Loads of people on it but it can get dificult to pick out
relevant posts if you're busy.

Firstclass is software used to communicate with other OU students, and
it's much better, in a lot of ways, than trying to use newsgroups. You
can download a copy from www.fcguru.org.uk (and also get loads of help
with setting it up). Once you have got it set up, and you've logged in,
make sure you click on the 'OU Shield' logo, and do some exploring.

And don't even go there if you don't have to.

I'm another newbie to OU!

Does the FC software do any more than my normal browser? I haven't
installed the software, but appear to have access to the First Class
"site" and all its servers, or am I missing something? Certainly there
doesn't seem to be too much of interest on these servers at the moment!

Bearing in mind the several negative comments on the FC software, I've
no wish to instal it if I don't have to.

You can do more "Stuff" with the FC Program than on the HTML site.

Some courses have tutorials on FC, some supply files for download on
FC. Install and try it. Doesn't use much space, and you can always
uninstall it!!

I'm curious as to why you would say that about Firstclass. Have you had
a bad experience?

The software version does loads more than the browser version and is
much easier and quicker to use.

It's not the best piece of software I've ever come across, but it's
pretty good once you get used to it. It just has it's little
idiosyncracies :-) I would definitely recommend it as the best way of
keeping in touch with other OU students.

The FC software enables you to work much more quickly than the web
interface, you can personalise it more easily, putting the ocnferences
you use regularly in the top level of your desktop. You can also
download messages from conferences you are interested in to your own
off-line version. this frees up the phone if you only have one line and
reduces costs if you do not have unlimited access.

pesonally I hate the web interface after having used the FC one and only
use it when I am away from my own PC.

that having been said, there is a new web interface in beta testing
which is much nicer -= I still prefer the FC software though.

I hope to start a course in Feb2002 as and when I hear back from OU. Can
you tell me which version of First Class I should download. Thanks

If you are running Windows 2000 or XP I guess, then you'll need FC5.5
not the latest version the OU send out!. It don't work!

Ok, the new new one may work, but the one I had last year added all the

It's not a daft question, I am new here too, the only mention I can find
about it is on the student pages, btw how do you get a username/password
for your own page?

I'm new to the OU this year. I received my registration/course pack only
this week although my registration went through in early December.

First Class is the software that the OU use for email and conferencing.
Its on the CD I received with my registration pack. According to the
text it allows you to interact with students and academics from all over
the university not just those on your course.

About to install it so I will see how it goes.

Good Luck

Sarah
