Official University of Leicester - Ask a Current Student Thread

Hey - I'm Alex,

I study Biological Sciences and specialise in Medical Physiology to be more specific. I'm currently in my third year and on a placement with the University.

To start the thread off, here's my top three things I love about studying in Leicester:

1) How diverse Leicester is - I lived in a very small town before coming to Leicester and I really loved the mix of different ethnicities and backgrounds in one place. This also means we have different kinds of celebrations such as the Diwali and Caribbean Carnival, happening annually.

2) Restaurant options - there are a wide range of places to eat and drink, with cuisines from various places. You name it, they have it here! Some personal favourites are San Carlo - an Italian restaurant - and Heavenly Desserts for anything sweet.

3) Although Leicester is a city, it has some really lovely greenery around - Abbey Park is a favourite in the summer for walks and picnics. Victoria Park next to uni is also a spot for students in the Summer and is home to the Carnivals.

I am really enjoying my placement at the moment and think it's a great addition to a university experience. It's a great way to get a head-start in the world of work, as well as trying a career you had never considered before. I've learnt a lot in a small space of time and already feel equipped to get into the world of work once I graduate. If you have any questions about placements, just ask!

I'm here to help - ask me questions about anything from student life, accommodation, studies, support and societies! What would you like to know about the University of Leicester?

If you want to find out more about the University of Leicester, there are loads of helpful videos here. You can also speak to other students studying at the University of Leicester here.

Look forward to chatting to you, and good luck!

hi! what accommodation would you recommend for a first year student? i'll be doing medicine and i know that george davies centre is very close to the city accommodation, but i've heard from a lot of students that the village is better for first years to get to know each other.
was also wondering if you also get accommodation with some other people from your course, or do they not take that into consideration when allocating it?

Hi @usernametired,

Firstly, congratulations on your offer to study Medicine!

If you wanted to live close to campus and the George Davis Centre then the nearest Halls of Residence would be Freemen’s Common.

On the other hand, The Village is a great location where lots of first year students live and socialise.

Therefore, when making your decision on where to choose to live, I would suggest you weigh up which factors are most important to you in first year. Is being near to the George Davies Centre your top consideration when choosing a place to live? If it is, then living near to campus is probably ideal for you, so you can access facilities that are nearby.

However, The Village is fantastic for making new friends and socialising with lots of leisure facilities on your doorstep like the gym and swimming pool.

Overall, you will settle in well at either Freeman’s Common or The Village, but given how intense Medicine is as a course, it may be wise to live nearer to where you course facilities are.

Best of luck!

Hi! I may be going to study Biological Sciences (Physiology with Pharmacology) at University of Leicester, should I do any preparation in terms of learning before university starts and if so what?

Hey @JaneniR! Sorry for the late reply here- hopefully you've joined us and are settling in well??

Typically no prep is required before you start your course- the School will definitely contact you if there is anything! Other than that it is always worth checking out the main website for arrival details, registration and reading any letters/emails/social media posts from the University

But mostly, spend the time looking forward to starting your course at the University of Leicester!

Please can someone confirm Freshers week start date. I've had an offer on Filberts accommodation and the start date is the 22nd, does this mean i miss freshers week due to not booking year 1 accommodation?

Thanks!
Hi there. I'd like to know Fresher's week start date too please. Is it before the lectures start or do lectures start concurrently?
