Discussing politics/ foreign affairs - a taboo?

I have studied IR for 3 years now.. and I notice that because I have to read so much literature, keep up with recent developments etc.. I am constantly discussing politics.
Now I am taking a course which is not directly about politics but does cover it a bit so I constantly find myself going too deep into the topic and kind of notice that others are not interested in international politics etc. Does it happen to you outside of your political / IR course? For example with friends, family or others in your life. How to silence that urge to discuss current topics if others are not that deeply invested / well-read ?
Uni always encourages to teach others what you have learned but it seems difficult.
