Hi there,

Congratulations on your offer! I am a recent York graduate and from my experience, all the colleges were great and were all really sociable. Some of my friends ended up in colleges they weren't expecting to be in, but actually found that they loved their college! I was in Derwent and I really liked the atmosphere and the people, and the retro vibe! We were very close to James and Vanbrugh, and they were pretty similar colleges. In Freshers' week, some colleges do joint socials, and you'll be able to meet loads of new people no matter what college you are in. I'm sure wherever you end up, you will have a great time! It's also worth having a think about budget, catered/self-catered, shared bathroom/ensuite and which campus you want to be on. You don't have to live on the same campus as your department as you can travel between campuses on the free bus service.

It might be useful for you to check out our vlogs by current student James, touring round the colleges on Campus West and Campus East.

I hope this helps - Hannah

If you're on a budget definitely look into Halifax College. I think it's the, if not one of, the cheapest rents on campus and it's all self catered. It's also quite good socially and for sports teams, and because it's mostly houses as opposed to flats you get to know the people you're living with quite well. If you have any other questions feel free to ask

Hi Hannah, I didn’t get any of my choices (I chose shared bath self catered) and have been given Derwent ensuite catered band 2. It’s fine but I can’t see any info online regarding these rooms. What blocks have ensuite rooms in Derwent please? Are the kitchens tiny? I love to cook so it’ll be a shame if there’s limited kitchen facilities. I’ve heard some horror stories about Derwent halls having no security (people peeing and defacating on the kitchen floor in P block - pre covid) and being generally loud & partying.

yeah derwent is a big partying college so it gets quite noisy (especially on wednesdays after sports socials). the kitchens are a fair enough size for catered accom since they're designed for socialising with ur flat but i don't think they have much storage. i've seen quite a few people from halifax (all self catered and shared bath) on threads looking to swap accom for ensuites and it's the cheapest on campus if you're interested in swapping?

Is there key cards to each flat at Derwent or can people just walk in?
Which blocks of Derwent have the ensuite rooms please?
Is there accommodation in the same blocks as the bars?
