Ultrasound 6 mark

Can anyone help a part of this question I don't understand, it says that the pulses are separated by a shorter time interval so that "the reflected pulses don’t overlap with the emitted pulses". Why would this be the case? Surely a longer time interval would mean less likelihood of overlap? Thanks in advance.

The round trip time for the echoes gets shorter as the bat gets closer to its prey so the bat is able to emit pulses more freqquently without overlapping the returning echo.

If you hear a recording of the sound of a pipistrelle bat hunting that has been electronically frequency shifted into the human audible range you'll hear what they're doing.
