what universities offer this?

what universities offer diagnostic radiography??? is there a lot ??

which ones have the lowest grade requirements??
There is quite a list but here are some as it's not a very common course like nursing that you will probbaly find in most or all University's:

University of Leeds
Teesside University
University of Salford
Sheffield Hallam University
Birmingham City University
Keelee University
University of Liverpool
University of Bradford
University of Derby
University of Leicester
University of Exeter
Cardiff University

For the low entry requirements, it depends on what your doing ie: A levels, BTEC, NVQ, acsess course, T levels etc

as theres not many courses, does it mean it would be incredibly competitive?
my GCSES aren’t great at all but im aiming for ABBB / ABBC / BBBB in a levels. would that be good enough? i also want to do a masters afterwards in medical ultrasound, does this mean i can become a sonographer afterwards?
what sort of work experience would help? im going to do some work experience once i get my drivers license:smile:

I'm not sure about incredibly but it is competitive, I am applying for the same course and was told that the Univeristy of Leeds got about 800/900 applications and only offer 64 places.

It's a variety for A-Levels, some unis want you to have science based a levels and some want something relating to the course. It depends on which unis you want to go tbh and see what they offer - have a look on their websites and try emailing the unis if they accept your subjects as I did the same because I do btecs.

If you want to become a sonographer, the University if Leeds do just a specific course on that however you won't be able to apply for radiography then as the School Of Medicine only accepts one healthcare course.

For work experience and most universities advice to have and get experience in the radiography department ie: in the hospital even if its for 1 day. Because radiography is much more than x-ray and scan etc, you need to show that you understand the behind the scenes/that there more than what we see

64 places only??? that's crazy. hopefully other unis are less competitive lol.
i take psychology, biology, sociology and rs so mostly essay-based subjects but ig biology is enough lol. so you can do sonographer as an undergraduate? so i can't do radiography but only a sonography degree?
have you had any experience? if so, is it hard to get some? thanks for ur help:smile:
Hi,

It really depends on where you live and if you plan on staying home or if you want to move away from home. I applied for a University near me. I am a mature student who already went to University but will be commencing a degree in Diagnostic Radiography at a University near me this September. I would say not to worry about University rankings, the most important thing I would concentrate on is ensuring that you secure a 2.1 or higher in the degree as once you graduate they will not be looking at the University as much but might focus more on how you did overall.

Well the University of Leeds is a Russell Group university and it offers 64 places so if it was another thats not a Russell Group it may be less.

Yes I think the biology will be enough, nono you can take medical ultrasound (sonography) as its own by leeds but like if you want to apply for radiography at Leeds again they won't let you. If it was like diagnostic radiography at Liverpool and then sonography/radiography or other course at Leeds it would be allowed because not from the school of medicine in Leeds. Its depending on the university because sonogrpahy and radiography are similar because after becoming qualified from taking radiography you can specialise in sonography that will take a little longer I think. I really hope this makes sense, I think I'm really bad at explaining.

I've had no experience tbh, I'm doing my research as I go - I am also doing my A-Levels now and will be finishing college this year (: so i apologies if I made mistakes and you have misunderstood.

thank you!! that makes sense. im thinking of possibly Brighton as a choice but not sure if that Uni is great but probably would like the area and seems like id like the uni but also maybe Hatfield as that is near me and near London. i know that Hatfield doesn't actually require biology but i'd rather study biology as it keeps options open and it also will help me in the future with learning the degree. i did look into the medical ultrasound (sonography) in leeds and will take that into consideration and may apply for that too next year (is when i will be applying). yes, if you chose the diagnostic radiography route instead the masters in medical ultrasound would take two years which is a long time ahhhh!!!

what a-levels do you take? honestly, you have done well to explain as it is hard to explain things like that so thank you i really appreciate the help:smile:. when do you apply to university? isn't it by January? hope everything goes well for youuu

Happy to help (:

I'm applying for the 2024 entry, which the deadline is for 31st January so hopefully I can send mine in by December as it is competitive I want to get it in quick.

Thank you, I hope the very same for you!

The NHS Course Finder lists every university that offers Diagnostic Radiography. Go to the individual uni websites to see the grades required

https://www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/career-planning/course-finder?field_leading_to_a_career_in_tid=202&field_region_tid=All&field_qualification_type_tid=64&field_study_mode_tid=All&items_per_page=25

Is it competitive? A little, they certainly get more applicants than radiotherapy, which is what I did. On my assessment day at SHU, they were actually offering deals to diagnostic radiography applicants who were willing to switch to radiotherapy.

Sonography on the other hand is *very* competitive. You are competing for a limited number of slots with not only diagnostic radiographers but therapeutic radiographers, nurses and midwives too - its a popular career path, and it offers a fast track to Band 7. Not to say it can't be done, but just be aware that its not a case of doing your degree and then going "can I be a sonographer now?"

thank you!!! i will probably stick with radiography but can i specialise in ultrasound ??? that’s what im interested in doing. or do i need to be a sonographer to do that? but i also dont mind performing MRIs as that seems interesting too.

Yes, sonographers are the people who do ultrasound. The traditional route is to qualify as a diagnostic radiographer, then try and get on a sonography course. However as I said, midwives, nurses and therapeutic radiographers can also train in sonography and are competing with diagnostic radiographers for the limited slots.

Diagnostic radiographers also perform MRI's, but again that tends to be a post-qualification thing, but less arduous than sonography. I get the impression that newly qualified D Rads are expected to "earn their spurs" in x-ray for a few years, and that they look unfavourably upon people applying for the degree who just want to go straight to sonography or MRI.
