Confidence

How can I be confident and make more friends? I'm very shy and find it hard to make conversation. I find it hard to be around men that I'm attracted to. I'm quite shy around men anyway. I've had problems with people throughout my life and want it to stop. I can't achieve my career goals as easily as others. Somebody please help. I've never been in a relationship and I'm 26. I feel lonely on weekends. I go on holiday by myself. I see others getting married and wonder if that will ever be me.

I find that the best way to make friends is through common interests. You can't generally force friendships because it takes a bit of time for people to get to know each other well enough. I don't know your plans and situation at the moment but university or work can be good places because you see the same people all the time and friendships just naturally happen. The second option is hobbies or going to any events. Friendships can crop up in any places, but the more you put yourself out there the more it is likely to happen.

If this is really interfering with your life then counselling or therapy can also be an option. I know it's hard when you feel like the world is against you but there are ways that you can manage these emotions and deal with this. I am a few years younger than you but I also have the same problem but I don't let it affect me. One thing that I find really effective is doing what makes me happy. Whether that's stuff that I am doing at work, stuff that I do with my family or something that I do in my spare time. If you have family like any brothers or sisters or your parents you can go on holiday together. You don't have to be alone or just with friends. And life isn't a race, yeah, these people are getting married but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. It's just that these people got together at the right place and at the right time.

Maybe find some friends to go out with on the weekend. You could go to a bar or maybe a club and meet new people there. This is the perfect way to socialise. Or are there any work colleagues?
