Welcome to the TSR best (post-war) PM tournament!
This is Pool A

TSR is asking the question: Who is the best (post-war) UK Prime Minster?

We're holding a tournament of UK Prime Ministers and asking you to vote to determine which was the most significant in history. We are currently in the group stages of this tournament, and this is Pool A.

All the other groups are linked at the bottom of this post, and there's a hub thread here if you're interested in reading more.*

The PMs in Pool B are:
Clement Attlee 1945-1951

Labour. The earliest PM in this list, Attlee led a ground-breaking government who oversaw the post-war recovery period in the second half of the 1940s. His government's most celebrated achievement was the establishment of the NHS.

David Cameron 2010 - 2016

Conservative. Leading the 2010 coalition government with the Liberal Democrats, Cameron's government mostly focused on austerity measures to improve economic recovery after the 2008 financial crash. Cameron and Attlee were both prime ministers when London hosted the Olympic games. When re-elected with a majority in 2015, Cameron called a referendum on membership of the EU.

Alec Douglas-Home 1963 - 1964

Conservative. The shortest serving prime minister on this list, with a premiership of 363 days. Douglas-Home actually renounced his status as a Lord in order to be PM, following his time as Foreign secretary during an intensive period of the Cold War.

Harold Macmillan 1957 - 1963

Conservative. Largely associated with his role in the Suez crisis and its aftermath, Macmillan led the UK through a period of Cold War escalation and fragmentation/dissolution of much of the British Empire. Macmillan styled himself as a calm figure and had a recognisably bushy moustache.

Margaret Thatcher 1979 - 1990

Conservative. She is second longest serving PM ever after Robert Walpole, and the longest serving in this tournament. Margaret Thatcher was a polarising figure in the 1980s when it came to economic and social policies - nicknamed the iron lady. While Thatcher is often idolised by Conservatives she is vilified by the political left as being responsible for cruelty and suffering. Thatcher is also the first woman to ever become prime minister.

Some big names in this one! And David Cameron and probably the least remembered post-war PM in Douglas-Home.
Is this supposed to be a multiple choice poll?

Voted Clement Attlee.

At least Alec Douglas-Home would probably have outlasted the lettuce.

Voted Clement Attlee.

At least Alec Douglas-Home would probably have outlasted the lettuce.

The results are in:

:king1: Clement Atlee
:king2: Margret Thatcher
:king3: David Cameron and Harold Macmillan
4th place goes to Alec Douglas Home

This means that Margaret Thatcher and Cement Atlee will go to the next round and other prime ministers have been eliminated.
