Every year, thousands of students find themselves navigating the challenging but potentially rewarding process of Clearing. Whether you didn't receive the offers you expected or have decided to pursue higher education at the last minute, Clearing can be a valuable opportunity to secure a place at university. However, it requires careful planning and proactive engagement. In this post, we'll provide you with expert advice to help you successfully apply during Clearing and make informed decisions about your future.

Clearing is open from 5 July to 17 October 2023. Some universities may open their clearing hotlines earlier, for example at CCCU, our lines will open on the 3rd of July 2023. Remember, you can't enter Clearing until you have your grades

- Didn't meet the conditions required

- Weren't made any offers

- Declined your offers

- Submitted your UCAS application after 30 June 2023

Time for some advice!

Stay Calm and Be Prepared:
First and foremost, it's important to stay calm and focused throughout the Clearing process. Although it can be stressful, maintaining a positive mindset and being prepared will greatly enhance your chances of success. Keep a clear head and gather all the necessary information, including your UCAS ID, exam results, and a list of courses you're interested in. Prepare a quiet and comfortable space to make phone calls and take notes during your conversations with universities.

Research and Make a Shortlist:
Before Clearing begins, spend time researching different universities and courses that align with your academic interests and career aspirations. Make a shortlist of potential options so that when Clearing starts, you have a clear idea of the institutions you'd like to contact. Consider factors such as course content, teaching quality, campus facilities, and location to ensure a good fit for your needs.

Act Fast:
Clearing operates on a first-come, first-served basis, so time is of the essence. As soon as you have your exam results, start contacting universities on your shortlist. Be proactive and make direct phone calls to the clearing team, clearly articulating your interest in their courses and providing relevant details about your qualifications and achievements. The sooner you act, the more opportunities you'll have to secure a place.

Be Engaged and Professional:
During your conversations with universities, be professional and engaged. Treat these calls as mini-interviews and make a positive impression. Clearly articulate your passion for the subject, your motivation to study at their institution, and any relevant experiences or achievements. Be prepared to discuss your exam results and how they relate to the course requirements. Demonstrate your enthusiasm and show that you've done your research on the university.

Be Flexible:
While it's important to have preferences, being open to alternative options can greatly expand your possibilities during Clearing. Consider related courses or similar subjects within a university if your first-choice course is unavailable. Admissions tutors can guide you in finding the best fit for your interests and qualifications. Keep an open mind and consider the long-term benefits of each option.

Seek Guidance and Support:
Don't hesitate to seek guidance and support throughout the Clearing process. Talk to your teachers, career advisors, and family members who can provide valuable insights and advice. Universities often have dedicated Clearing helplines and email addresses and online forums such as here on The Student Room can also be excellent resources for clarifying any doubts or concerns you may have. Remember that you're not alone, and there are professionals available to help you make informed decisions.

Prepare for the Next Steps:
Once you have secured a place through Clearing, ensure you understand the next steps in the process. Universities will provide you with information on how to accept the offer and any additional requirements, such as submitting relevant documents. Take note of deadlines and follow instructions carefully to secure your place. Use this time to familiarise yourself with the university, connect with future classmates, and make any necessary arrangements for accommodation or student finance.

Clearing may seem like a daunting process, but with the right approach, it can open doors to exciting academic opportunities. By staying calm, being proactive, and engaging with universities, you can increase your chances of securing a place at a university that suits you!
