what to do if you're scammed by a Vinted buyer?

I've sold something expensive on Vinted and the buyer is now claiming that the package was ripped open during the shipping and that it was empty, asking for a refund.
At first I just felt really bad for the buyer as he sounded very excited to receive the item, and was sad/upset for both of us, but then my friend pointed out that the buyer could have ripped it open himself and then taken the photo and claimed refund.
Vinted is currently investigating the issue, but how would they know if the buyer is being honest or scamming?
I had literally treasured the item before selling it (I'm broke ahaha) so I'm gutted either way, I wanted it to go to someone who would love it and take care of it, or at least someone legitimate...
can people at the shipping company open a package if they have a reason to suspect something inside it?

did a neighbour open the package?
